Thread: Well, she charges for it...

I had a guy send me a tell last night asking for me to do a makeover on him. I replied that I was currently making over another person and would be a while. I then suggested he contact the other master id that was on the other side of the cantina. He replied back "Well, she charges for it"...

Now I normally don't charge for ID, but the costs of maintaining my alternate toon have increased, so I will be charging from now on, and up front. I have a feeling if we don't start charging, and charging something reasonably large, we are going to get overrun by complete makeovers on Patch 8 and people will want to tip 500 credits for 20 minutes work.

The argument most people have against paying an ID a reasonable amount is that the ID requires no materials to do their craft, and a hologrinder with help can literally grind to master in a matter of hours. So, most non IDs feel that what we do is not worth the money. Yet of course they still want it. My thoughts are that this profession is valuable from both a roleplay standpoint and from a player desire standpoint. I'd guess most players don't seek help from an ID for one of two reasons: 1. They are a 1337 shooter gamer PvP type who could care less what they look like so the stock human male with brown short hair and brown goateeis enough, OR 2. They don't know what we can do.

I'm gonna start experimenting tonight on how much I can get paid for a single change, and whether or not I can make people look up and be specific of what they want, instead of me showing them every hairstyle and them saying "oh, I thought there was more".

I enjoy being an ID, but it doesn't mean I have to be a charity shop...

I just noticed the Okie Dokiee, that's so cute!

I just tell the silly people that say I don't use resources that they're paying for my time. It's gotten pretty rare for people to tell me that, but then Starsider is heavy on the roleplayers and mature players. I'd like to discuss pricing with some of the ID's on my server. I guess I'll email the ones I know about once Publish 8 hits TC and we can see what's what

Right now I tell my customers

Before startingI need 2k to cover the Impearl luxury tax; and when we are finished most customersnormally tip; just tip whatever you feel is appropriate for my time will be more than sufficient.

I have not been playing my ID character much lately, so have not used it much. But no one yet has been bad about it, most like the RP of it.

I wish everyone would charge for any service they provide. I can understand not charging friends, guildmates, etc. but if people don't charge for a service, it can potentially cause problems for every other person of that profession on their server. I hope I don't have to deal with anything like that come Publish 8, because I'm darn well gonna be charging. I have a feeling I'm going to be a busy little beautician the first few days...

I haven't gotten that line in a while (not that I've been able to log in more than once a week for an hour or two the past 3 weeks but anyway..) I go by tips only. 90% of the tips I get are given out to RPcommunities/new players. The remaining 10% is split between clothes, travelling expenses, and vehicle maintenance.

All that being said..I remember who doesn't tip. If those people come back and ask for changes I usually will only do it if I'm in the mood to. If they feel that my time isn't worth anything then I'm certainly not going to fret about IDing them.

I get this line of crap all the time. usually from Architecht jerkwads who are making 400% sheer profit off everything AFTER materials costs. Yet they stiff me on a lousy 3K ID job, or insult me for wanting money for my Master profession like EVERY other one feels entitled to earn. AFTER having ME track them down & work on them. Then they spend 50K on a cheesy broken BE pet which they then take to Dathomir to use their 500K Krayt pistol to do 30K missions solo all day.......

If there was a rule that the game just wouldn't allow them to hit "accept" without paying a set amount of credits...I'd rejoice. And I charge really low anyway. My priciest thing is 12K & most stuff is like 3K.

Fortunately, we're getting something like this soon, I believe. Not in publish 8... but in a mini-publish between 8 and 9.

I always point out that the time I spent practicing my skills/earning xp is time I could have been out running combat missions had I wanted to, and that because Image Designers aren't that common, I had to spend a LOT of cash "buying" my skills from Trainer NPCs.

Of course, that goes over the head of the average L33TD00D...

Well, after a weekend of doing a lot of image designing, sometimes 3 and 4 people waiting in line, I have decided to come up with a pricelist and I posted it on the wanderhome trade forum.

Altho not quite as high as some people's prices I think these prices will satisfy all the cheapskates on Wanderhome. My payments on the weekend (I only asked for whatever they were willing to tip), ranged from 0 with not even a thank you, up to 50,000 credits. My biggest problem is still all the people who say "Can you change me and make me look good?", with no knowledge of what they want, then they refuse every alteration. I did not discuss pricing with anyone, I just wanted to see what people would pay. The average I received was prolly 2k for a few minor alterations.

From now on, I get paid, or they go elsewhere.

I tend to ask people if they want to donate they can i dont like putting prices on ID but i know some people can abuse that system for instance last night someone asked me to do an id job but i was husy sorting out another customer. He had to get a shuttle but i told him i would come to his location to work on him. Well after 30 mins of my time and getting that person sorted out he just said thx and left but i have had others give me 10k for just changing their hairstyle.

I would hate to start charging specific prices but should i stick to what im doing with the occasional people who dont bother paying paying but most do or should i start charging a certain fee?

I have a set of rules, posted in my bio, to help people understand my methods. They are:

1) I work for tips... I don't work for free. Period.

2) You are paying for my time, not how many times you click 'accept'. If you make me spend an hour offering you changes before deciding to stick with your current look, and think you don't owe me anything, think again, sweet cheeks.

3) I don't travel. If you want my services, you can come to me. (Some exceptions do apply)

4) swg.atomicspacekitty.com has pictures of available hairstyles and other changeables for every race. That being said, don't ask me to show you every hairstyle. LOL

5) I am, if I may say so, VERY good at what I do. My primary goal is to make you look as good as you can. If you're not happy with something, tell me, and I'll work on it until you are.

I really think I had more than that... but who knows. Anyway. If I'm providing a service, I want it clearly understood that I expect compensation for that service. If I fail to receive any, well... let's just say I have a whole lot of friends who are easily angered.

When I work as an image designer (sometimes I have to go undercover for a bit of peace and quiet) I provide a personal service. As with most in the profession I ask questions to gauge what the person actually wants and then provide them with several suggestions. I make a point of asking if they are pleased with the results, if they have anything else which needs doing, etc. - everything you would expect.

I started out asking people to tip me what they consider to be appropriate. Sadly that means people abused my good nature. One chap went through all the hair designs several times as they could not make up their mind and then tipped me 500cr - it took almost 40 minutes to go through them (and he decided on the one which I first suggested anyway).

I have made it a point now to use a pricing policy and I mail this to clients in advance. One Master Chef walked away on Saturday when I asked 4,000cr to make him obese - with the new content the chef profession is a good one to make a decent living on these days. One person wanted a simple skin colour change (slightly darker) followed by some building up of their waistline so they did not look quite like a barbie doll. I calculated the price as 12k for the work (several changes were made to get the waistline correct). They tipped me 50k - clearly someone who acknowledged that not all Image Designers are holo grinders and for some it is actually our primary source of income (my other skills being Master Entertainer and Dancer).

So I guess I will turn away some business by charging for my time but I suspect that the business I am turning away would have not actually tipped me for the work anyway. I do perform ID for free on obviously new players who had no idea what they were doing during character creation.

I welcome the changes being proposed with regards to the secure ID design/trade window. I just hope that it does not take away a lot from the creative and personal aspect of the job - if it does then my prices shall of course reflect that.
