My dog's been having seizures since about 2 pm yesterday. We came home from running errands (we being the boyfriend and me) and she wouldn't let us in the house... she didn't know who we were, anytime we tried to come in she'd bark and growl and snap. Eventually she let us in and we took her to the vet, and they said she'd probably had a seizure. Well, it was confirmed about 10:30 last night when she had a massive seizure right in front of us in the living room (yes, my heart stopped). We took her to the animal ER and they hospitalized her, and then we took her to our vet this morning. She had quite a few during this period, but they gave her valium and phenobarbitol (antiseizure medication) around 9 am this morning and she seems to have been okay since then. They sent us home with tablets to give her every 12 hours, and so far it seems to be doing the trick, but it's been a horrible, horrible two days and all I've done is cry and worry myself sick, and I have absolutely NO desire to play SWG. I'm going to try to get some rest tonight... thank God, the boyfriend is off the next two days and can babysit her. I'm just really stressed, we live on a shoestring budget and we have no savings to speak of, so paying for her hospitalization has been a traumatic thing, to say the least. On top of all this, my stupid car window stopped rolling up and then fell down into the car door, so it's been at the shop. I've had my mom's car and have had to get up and take her to work every morning (I am NOT a morning person), and I'm just not good with sick things. I'm terrified constantly that Avrey (my dog) is going to have a seizure, or that I'll wake up or come home from work and find her... I can't even say it. This dog is our baby, and Brian absolutely adores her.

Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know, that's why I've not been posting/playing the last couple of days. I'll try and update on the situation. Thankfully, the medication seems to be helping, but it's been a harrowing (and expensive) couple of days and I need some time off.

I love all of you

Aww Fuschia *hugs*. Don't even worry about SWG. You just take care of your doggie.

Oh no Fuschia Your poor doggie. We had the window permanently open issue too recently, what an awful way to have to spend money

I'm also a pet lover (currently have two male german shepherds) and know how you must feel. and know how bad vet bills can be.

Phenobarbitol is a good drug and should do the job, I was on it for about 6 months for MS muscle spasms (they are kinda like a mini-seizure) that was about a year ago, but anyway there was no side-effects to using phenobarbitol. so your doggy should be fine. (by the way what is her name?)

I'll say some prayers for you and your dog

We love you too, good luck

Yes yes, there are more animals on phenobarbitol than you think. When I was a kid, we got a cute siamese kitten. A week later he suddenly started spasming. We immediately thought he was choking and rushed him to the vet. A few visits later, we found out it was seizures. My stepfather was a little peeved that he had been sold a "defective cat" but under no circumstances would I let them "trade in" the cat. You don't trade in a cat! The horror!

Anyway... for a bit it was a pain in the butt because he was so small that we had to feed him liquid pheno (they didn't make pills in his dosage.) Have you ever tried to give a cat liquid medication? I regularly squirted myself all over with that pink goo.

The good news is that pheno is pretty dang cheap. After the initial vet stuff was over, the pheno was not thatbad (well I wasn't paying, but so my parents said). In fact, my mother said, because it's a pet med, it costs like 1/4 of the human version, not sure why, maybe because humans want to think their pheno is better. /shrug.

Good luck with your pup. I truly hope she improves and that Fortuna smiles on you in the future. I've been where you are, it sucks. Hopefully things will get better from here on out /wookieehug

Update:

The medication seems to be working, thank God. We're giving her one little tablet every 12 hours and she hasn't had a seizure since about 9 am yesterday morning. However, she's suffering serious separation anxiety issues, we had to let her sleep with us last night or she would have howled down the apartment. LOL.

Phenobarbitol is good stuff, and fortunately it's much cheaper for doggies than for humans. I'm epileptic myself and was on Dilantin for years and years. It hasfew short term side effects, but it's hard on the liver, so we'll have to have her tested every month.

I'm now understanding what my family went through every time I had one. Jeez.

Thanks for your support everyone, hopefully things will settle back to normal.

Wow do you live on the other side of my mirror? I cant play SWG anymore because of comp issues, so thats one thing in common. Secondly my mom's toy poodle has the same seizure problems and she seems to be in the same shoestring bucket as you... Im not really there, but my name is Brian and Im having car issues as well, except my window wont roll down, and the car wont move

I really hope everything pulls through for you.

Oi! I hope everything turns out allright Fuschia... It's a shame to see the furry ones have problems, especially for some people who've drawn strength from the boundless life of animals. Take care of your freind there and we'll see you far far away some time soon again.

May the Force be with Avrey, and you too.

I'm an animal lover as well, and I grew up with dogs and cats around me, so I can imagine a little how it feels when one of the furry ones is having problems. Being on a superlow budget myself i cannot imagine how to deal with costs like you just mentioned *hug* I truely hope it works out well for you and your loved ones.

FuschiaD ,

Just an FYI, if she does ever have an anther seizure you should lay her on her side, to keep her from swallowing her tongue. My wife (before I knew her) had a dog kicked it the head by a horse and he was on Pheno for the seizures he got from it. (head trauma can cause seizures)

Good Luck
