Thread: General Thoughts on Image Designer

Folks,

I'm trying to decide where I want to go with my character. I just hit Novice doctor and I'm trying to decide if I want to pursue that to master doctor/pistoleeer (A potent combination) or pursue something else.

I've been tinkering with Image Design and I'm enjoying it, but I'm trying to figure out how much of a career I could make out of it. How is business? What do you enjoy or dislike about the class? Any helpful thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

How much of a career you can make of it depends on a lot of things:

Are you very social and outgoing?

Do you enjoy hanging out in cantinas, med centers, etc just chatting with people?

Do you have the patience to go through 25 hairstyles... twice... so the person can decide the very first one you picked for them is the one they like best?

Do you have the eye to create an aesthetically pleasing look, for those times when someone gives you a free hand to go head to toe?

Is tactfulness a strong point? You'll need it for some the god awful things your customers will want you to do to them, to suggest something a bit less eye hurting.

I support myself, my harvesters, and abudding Pet Supply businesswithImage Design. I have a donation only policy thatworksverywellfor me. Sure, I have some that will stiff me, but that's generally the exception, not the rule. And I have others that tip me generously, ona regular basis, to have an "on call" Master Image Designer.

I love helping people find the look that is "them". It is not unusual for me to spend half an hour or more with a client just getting their hairstyle and color right. For me, it's very rewarding when I'm finished, and they look at themselves and say - It's perfect! A surprising amount of people give no real thought to their appearance in character creation, in their rush to get into the game, and are thus left with a rather plain avatar. They want to feel unique. They want to look special. That's my job. And 98% of the time, I love it.

How many clients I have in a night depends on where I'm hanging out at the moment. If I'm at The Sugar Rose (player run cantina), 5-10 per night, sometimes more, as people do travel to where I'm at for their makeovers. If I happen to be in the cantina in Mos Espa, double or triple that number, easily. Although, I make far less in tips in theEspa Cantina than I doat the Rose. Clientele of the establishment makes a HUGE difference.

My one big gripe about it is not having some sort of menu for the CLIENT to chose from. It would be so much more convenient for THEM to be able to tell me - I want style 12 from the hairtyling menu. That and the bugs (though very minor) still plaguing us.

I would suggest, give it a shot! You might really like it, and if you don't, you can always do something else later on.

Perie,

Thank you kindly for such an excellent and thoughtful reply. I guess that's what I'm trying at this point. I know what skills I WILL NOT have room for, regardless of whether I go Doctor or Image Designer, so I'm working on ID/Doctor and dropping what I can afford to drop to give me the chance to try both out.

I just hit Image Design 3 in the Entertainer line and I very much want to get that to Novice Image Designer. I'm hoping once I take the title, I can see how much interest I get from folks to see if its something I want to pursue.

I need to travel more I think. I was in the Cantina in Talus last night and I was disappointed to hear that all the entertainers were happy with their looks and didn't feel a need to change....Sigh.

Dr. Lazlo, I would recommend getting yourHairstylist title up as soon as you hit ID IV. I get stopped a lot more often for hairstyle requests than for anything else, and especially if I have my Master Hairstylist title up. Your hairstyle selection will be fairly limited at ID IV but you will still have some nice options. Make sure you have the abillity to put the person's style back before you start and let them know if it's not available to you. They may still want a change and you don't risk them getting upset if they change their minds and you can't fix it. I charge 3k for the nicer hairstyles and occasionally get tipped over and above that. Now and then someone can't afford my charge and usually say they will find me the next day, and do. I give career entertainers a 50% discount... So far it's been a lot of fun. Iespecially enjoy customers that want a unique look, know what they do and don't like, but still seek input and suggestions, a lot of fun

Kwee,

Thank you as well for replying. I'll do that (adjust my title when possible). I have noticed I did get a few new hairstyles for men (Haven't tried women yet as my other character has leku /smile).

I have to see if I have video card issues. When my hair comes up, I just see a matte brown outline of the hair, though a few of the styles look like they render properly. So its hard for me to tell the style just from the outline. Hopefully its me and I can find a fix as it makes picking a hairstyle difficult.

I'll do a bit more design work this weekend and see if I can hit Novice ID. My doctor skills are on hold for a bit it seems.

No, I don't think it's your video card, in the ID menu, the hairstyles look like blobs.

I've tried it out on 3 different machines, with 3 different cards, same thing.

Also, when you change someone's hairstyle, it will default to dark brown, and need to be re-adjusted (though no one will see the adjustment until they log out)

The best thing to do is get a male and female from each race to model the hairstyles for you (if possible) so that you have an idea of what they look like.

Will it appear brown or BE brown? I did someone's hair last night. When I finished, it looked like the hair was brown on both of my accounts (I figured out what to do. I set up Keegan for Dr/Pistoleer and created a new character for Merchant/Image Designer). When I asked HIM, he said it still looked blonde to him. But it was brown for me.

Does that mean I need to adjust the tone and have the customer log out?

When you change the hairstyle, the hair color still looks normal to the customer, but brown to everyone else. When they relog, it will look the right color to everyone. There is no need to change the color, just be sure to warn them that their color will look brown to others until they relog, if they get a hairstyle or hair color change (including facial hair).

Dr. Lazlo, if this would help you, I've submitted screenshots of all available hairstyles to Warcry. You could see them all there (I've put them in order as they appear in our ID interface) and refer customers there.

Go to swg.warcry.com look under Resources == Image Design/

Kwee,

Your screenshots are phenomenal and have already come in handy. Once already I was able to look at them and say "Sorry, I know I can't do that style yet." It's been a big help so thank you VERY much!

Hey Perie, it's me, Tamahira Lo'tem. I read your first post and it was really good.

I am just wondering, how much do you normally charge people? This one lady wanted her hair style and color changed and doing this took about ten minutes. I charged her 500 credits. Even though she *cough* didn't pay me *cough*. I actually sent her a tell saying that the total was 500 credits but she never replied or payed me. I'm wondering if I charged too much because it wasn't a complex hairstyle but it did take up my time and well, I provided a service just like a tailor, chef, architect ect.

Also, I never caught you last night hehe so I still need some training in Intermediate Marking Customizations. Thanks.
