With us Image Designers doing stat migrations, we ought to be able to inform our clients of how they best set their stats.
I've had several people ask me questions about what the best settings are for the various professions, for wearing certain armour, et cetera. Unfortunately I don't know enough about armour or combat professions to give them any proper advice.
I would prefer it if I could offer people some advice, it makes for better service I think. So, my question to you is if you know of any sources where I can find information on what the best stats are for different professions, or what you need if you want to wear certain armour.

It depends on what they do with their character. Certain professions drain certain pools. Some professions drain more than one pool. For example, being a medic and healing/buffing takes ONLY mind pool... but if you were, say, a pistoleer, you have specials that take from different pools. One special might use action, while another uses mind. Let me tell you how mine are set on my characters. Fuschia is an ID/pistoleer, and is an occasional PvPer. To that end, she has her mind pools - all three - totally maxed, her main health and action pools minimized, and any leftover points are spread out amongst the secondaries. This seems to be a standard PvP-oriented setup, because the most effective PvPers target mind pool (since it cannot be healed by a doctor). Therefore, if they plan to get into that, you may want to recommend something like this. The other stats can all be buffed 2k+, but their mind pool is likely ALWAYS going to be the lowest one. If they plan to PvP a lot, that can hinder them.
As for Ava, she's a master dancer/master tailor, so her action pool is completely maxed (being a twi'lek though, the stats can't go very high). The remainder of the pool points are in her mind pools, and her health is minimized, since she never uses it. This way, she has the action pool available to her for dancing, and the mind available for surveying.
Hope this helps a bit.

Fuschia's a human, she can't max all 3 mind pools. Best you can get on mind-heavy as a human is 400/400/400, 400/400/400, 1000/1000/1000 (human pools max at 1100.) But you're right about maxing mind. Right now my melee-heavy toon runs at 500/550/550, 500/550/550, 1100/550/550 because (a) 550 secondaries let me don my compo unbuffed, (b) the 1100 mind gives me a 550-point powerboost, and (c) I don't run high-end content without full 2000+ buffs, double brandy, single canape anyway.
The biggest thing to remember right now is that secondaries are key—if you use little enough of your pool and regen fast enough all you need worry about is novice medic to handle the rest.

Ok, I don't suppose there's one complete lists of all professions and what stats their specials drain on?

BTW, I should mention that by 'maxed' I meant maxed as much as I, as a human, can be. They vary according to race.

It varies within profession—for instance, as a swordsman my HAM drain is very different when I'm using a Powerhammer versus a Scythe. So there's really no way to know but to go out and use whatever weapon/equipment you're tuning for, then tweak based on that.

<----- silly wookiee
How do armor encumbrances work? I had someone the other night and it took us three sesions before he could put on his ubese helmut. Exhausting for us both. I wanted to tell him "if your encumbrance is ___ then migrate your stats to ____." But I've never had to deal with encumbrances. THe Musician in our group was trying to give us advice, but we were both still confused and I think he was laughing too hard to be really coherent.
Is it a point to point translation? Say the encumrance is 100 to Focus. Do you have to have 100 Focus points free? Or is there a minimum you have to keep free? So 100 encumbrance you would need 150 points free? Or can you even have encumbrance right on a secondary? Is it 100 encumbrance to mind means you need to have 100 mind, 100 focus, and 100 Willpower free?
Hehe. Almost 12 months in the game and I'm still such a noob. I've never migrated my stats and never had to worry abouut armor encumbrance! Im useless! I think I totally ignored armor out of a certain wookiee bitterness. Now, I blush.

Add up the encumbrances for the entire suit. Your secondaries must exceed the encumbrances by 1 or more points to don the full suit. For instance, a suit with 500/450/550 would require strength/constitution of 501,quickness/stamina 451, focus/willpower of 551.

Great post

It greatly depends on what specific profession your customer is taking on. I tend to set my stats based upon the special attacks I intend to use more than being able to equip a certain type of armor. Thehigh presenceof buffs has made stat migrations for armor a non-issue anyway.
The best advice is to check out the boards in the combat professions and see what they recommend. Everyone has a certain preference on how they play their prof., but it's those rare few that have stuck with one prof. sincelauch that are the true masters and they can tell you exactly what does and does not work.
This is also very dependent on race and my advice is for you to set up an alt character and try to see what works best for you.
