So I get an email from a player that he needs a stat migration. I was currenly dancing in the Mos Eisley cantina, so I proceed to message him and ask if now is a good time to do it. He responds that now is ok, so I let him know that we must find an image designer tent inorder to do the migration.
I suggest Theed, and he agrees. However, he lets me know that while he does not know the location of the tent in Theed, he will use the /find feature once he arrives. So I proceed to head to Theed, and end up getting an additional migration request once I land. So I figure that I will do this one while I wait on my original customer. After about 15 mintues, I am wondering where the original guy is. So I message him, and he's still in Mos Eisley, getting his wounds healed in the medical center.
At this point, this is when I begin to get impatient. He messages me back, and says,"OK I am ready, what planet is Theed on?" I tell him naboo, and after about 10 more mintues, he arrives at the starport. The lag on his computer is so bad, it takes us about 5-10 mintues to walk from the starport to the ID tent.
Im totally prepared at this moment for the worst, so I ask him the customary,"Have you ever had a migration before?". He replies no, so I instruct him on what he needs to do, and when he is all finished adjusting his stats, he should message me. He replies by telling me that before he does any adjustment, he needs to write down all the current values, and the potential min/max stats for future reference. After about 15 more mintues, he messages me and tells me,"Thanks" and begins to walk out. I have to stop him asap and tell him that while he may have changed the stats on his stat sheet, the final changes will not take place until I do a migration on him. Obviously he thought that as long as he was in the salon with me, that he would beable to change his stats. Anyway, I get him back into the salon, migrate him and finally, he is done.
While I could have been angry, I totally understood where he was coming from, with him being very new to the game. However, this was the longest I have ever spend doing one migration on a customer. At least he got the migration right the first time lol.

Stories like this show that some parts of the game are very inaccessible to new players. I wonder what could be done to alleviate this problem.

Actually this story is a perfect example. I think one major problem in this game is, that new players are basically left alone with this great, but rather complex and confusing game. The newbie-helper-droids are a good start, but they are simply not good enough yet. There needs to be more guidance for a newbie to find into the game and it's complex gaming system as well.
Two of my RL-friends more or less stopped playing SWG, because they felt literally overwhelmed by the complexity of the game from the beginning and by the fact, that you have nearly no way to tell what all those skills and values really mean. Especially when you play your very first character, it is increddilbe hard to tell which skillbox will be usefull for you or what you really have to do if you want to start your path to one or more of the elte professions.
Story driven series of quests, that give you some guidance would be really great and helpfull. It's something that would help find into the game and strengthen the ties with it right from the beginning.
Too bad it will not be possible to design such quests before the CU is fully done. Even the proposed non-combat revamps need to be well on their ways, atleast for the novice professions, until something like that can be included into the game

My idea on this "new" player delima.
First as I have done in several posts I will bring up Anarchy Online. There they have a "noob" area where you have to gain certian lvl before you can enter the "real world". I do not think really needed here, another thing that happened in the "noob" area was your name was put on a list and the ARK's would get the chance to come check in on you and see if you had any questions about the game so far.
Second I wouldn't mind "Mentoring" in the game. As a player you could sign up to be a mentor, could be as selective as profession, race, alignment (reb, imp, or neutral) then when a new player creates his/her toon they have the option of asking for a mentor. Also could be a way to get one for a set amout of time after creation.
The Player offering to be the mentor could also be a "general" mentor to all classes races etc....
While in Mentor mode, the 2 should be grouped, all travel is free, and the faction scanns are off. I am sure to this part more could be added.
This would be a great way for very new players to learn about the whole system... start off with a friend and give the higher end "bored" players somthing more to do in the game.
In my time as an ARK, my player account was free, but I ended up doing the ARK thing all the time.... I had more fun helping other players then the "grind" that seems to end up in most games...

Great idea. Probably want to add in that:
a) The Mentor cannot get XP for any missions.
b) Only the newbie-level missions are accessible.
This is to prevent people from creating chars to work the system and get XP.
Or... now that I think about it... could there be something like "Mentor XP", which could score you a rare, but non-combat prize after a certain amt? Like a unique painting or something?
BTW... how do I *find* ID's, esp on Ahazi? Man, it's like finding gold out here... if u have recommendations on one with a GOOD eye for toon aesthetics...
Thanks a bunch.
Yeah, I know... what am I doing on an ID thread? Long story.

I think this idea of mentors is pretty cool. I think this was the basic idea behind the helper-flag, but it's not really working that great here. But I think there are ways to improve this system to help new players to find into the game.

I think the idea of the Mentor is great and would really help new players get into the game. Even though I have my helper tag on all the time and do help new players when i see them, i'd like to be able to help them from when the arrive in the game. It'd be very good fun and would provide something more

I wish that there were system-created profession chat channels. That might help helpers and new players find each other more easily.

I agree, such a newbie-channel would be very helpfull. It's working on a larger scale on Testcenter very well with the TCPA-chat-channel. I don't see why it shouldn't work for newbies and helpers in a similar way.
