I had a client just run off today - very polite - but after saying thank you, he just took off for the door. I asked him whether I had missed the tip (sometimes the spam makes me pass it by). He said that he had lost 500k and was waiting for a CSR response and only had 3k for shuttles. I told him that I didn't mind not getting tipped, but this was the sort of thing that you should say up front, so you don't look like a jerk for not tipping.

He was probably just a jerk and lying, but honestly, I just didn't want to deal with fighting with him at that point. He was sort of a weirdo - first he said he wanted "black" skin, and I said we only have dark brown - then he kept saying lighter. He ended up with a very slight tan.

I had a similar experience the other night, n'Jessi. Had two clients approach me while I was waiting for a guildmate to finish four storage MSEs for me. I figured, "What the heck, I've got time to kill, might as well help them out." So I get to work. One wants a muscle change. No problem. 500cr tip (d'oh!) The other wants a height change. No problem. 500cr tip again (d'oh!) So I'm still standing around when the height-change comes back and asks for a skin change…I know I'm about to get stiffed, but I do it anyway—he'd said he was poor, and apologized for not being able to tip more…so I took pity on him and just thought of it as a two-part session for a player in need.

Now, you may think "that's bad, but not terrible…" but wait, there's more. I'd mentioned to the guildmate I was waiting on that I'd just been tipped fairly poorly twice in a row, and he knew who I'd been working with, since we were grouped. Not 20 minutes later he tells me (via GuildChat) that the "poor" player is now offering millions for holocrons in roughly the same place I'd ID'd him. Poor my (expletive deleted)! So this guy's now on my "denial of service" list.

(On the other hand, I've had some really great experiences that far outweigh the negatives—bartered a full ID session for full healing from an up-and-coming Combat Medic who was low on funds the other night…met some very nice tailors in the cantina before that…it's all relative, really.)

Now this guy just emailed me for a fourth time - no tip, mind you - asking whether I had a tusken raider uniform for sale (which request he had e-mailed me not two days ago). I sent him an e-mail back asking him to take me off his list (didn't even mention the tip). I'm thisclose to /addignore.

Funny, no tip is an instant /addignore for me…I guess you just have more patience than I.

I have Master ID and I just don't charge...and hinting for a tip makes it less of a tip and more of a fee.

Most of the time people will appreciate the fact that you don't charge them and give you a nice big tip. But then, most people don't take more than ten minutes of work for me.

I just don't see the point in charging for something that doesn't cost me at all, besides, I enjoy doing it in the first place. If you don't enjoy it, why bother?

Oh but the plot thickens - Mr. tip stiffer has now added me to his mailing list and now sends me advertisements for his shop, and desperate "help the rebels at x point are getting attacked, send help." I wrote him back with first "why are you sending me a waypoint to your clothing shop when I'm a tailor" and "you stiff me on a tip, and now you add me to your mailing list?" He responds with "I'll tip u when sony gives me my money back." And, to quote Wayne - yeah and monkeys could fly out of my butt!

Ick. I hate unsolicited email. If I shop at your store once, don't email me forever! If you haven't seen a purchase from me for months, a "special moving sale" is not going to draw me back. And for god's sake, why are you going to email about a raid? Chances are by the time I read it the raid's over…some people.

Doesn't cost you anything? It costs time, which is exactly what I tell my patrons. When asked how much my fees are I always respond with "I do not charge set fees. Whatever you feel is appropriate for my time will be sufficient." And as far as it goes I enjoy ID immensely, or I'd not have mastered it to begin with. I do, however, have a house to maintain, and harvesters to put up if I intend to progress in tailor anytime soon, and all of that takes money. Money which I could be making in the time I'm spending with a client. But I'm with the client…so it seems only fair they tip at least a token to show their apreciation for my time. (And as long as I don't find out they're lying about being poor, even something as little as 100cr is fine by me, so long as they're polite. A "thank you, I love my new look" is almost as important to me as making sure my house doesn't burn down.)
