Thread: Expectations for an Image Designer correspondent
Reiella wrote:
Bit curious exactly as to what the problem is with Rilawyn's comment there is.
You know what my problem with that comment is? That our correspondent, as Kwee pointed out, apparently didn't think xp was too fast when she was working her way to master ID. Funny that. It's always easy to ask for a nerf once you've hit a master.
"Rilawyn wrote (shortly after becoming the correspondent):
Players are saying the Image Design skillgains are too fast. Personally, I think they are fine. I power-gamed my skillREALLY hard (honestly, about 10 hours a day), and it still took abouttwoweeks."
The lack of danger and the Entertainer resentment is just common throughout all the Entertainer professions. IDs get less of it than the others since there's no perception that we're actually required for anything.
And honestly, danger doesn't have anything to do with the Entertainer professions, it still results in frustration from other players.
I'm pretty sure that unless you're in a group of 19 master Dancers/Muscians, you're not going to beat 5 hours for mastery of even the Non-EH portions of Dancer and Muscian, and mostly that's a matter of Time.
And our correspondant responds that the fast xping is possible detrimental to the level of respect Image Designers get. Or would you perfer that the correspondant attempt to maintain that the class isn't quick to xp? Or would you perfer that she just not comment at all? I'm guessing hte later personally. Fun no-win situation though I guess.
Anycase, I'm sorry if I repeat stuff I already said, just responding.
I agree with Kwee's assessment of expectations of the ID correspondent, as based onguidelines by Q3PO.
As laid out, it would seem that our correspondent has not successfully lived up to those expecations/guidelines especially in the area of feedback/communication. Long absences in the past and now recently her vague or diversionaryanswers to direct questions are the norm lately.
In my opinion, the correspondent would submit a draft after discussing points with the community and be sure and let the devs know if there is contention within the community about certain points--i.e. the so-called fast track to ID. (Reference to state of the profession thread)
I have to admit that I don't getwhat some are fussingabout with this skill gains deal. Maybe it's because I didn't use spice at all when I was working toward master ID. Maybe it's because I didn't make an effort to grind the IDskill like some have.Or maybe I've not paid enough attention to what the majority ofpeoplewere saying here in the forum. But it didn't strike me that many folks were harping on this "skill gains issue" at all. So for the life of me I can't understand why it's the ONLY issue that our correspondent ever asked for any feedback on.
I dunno. Maybe our State ofprofession document is moreaccurate than I thinkandTwi'leks eyebrows and skill gains are the biggest issues we face in Image Design. Then again, I don't recall our ever being asked, as a prelude to the State of Image Design document being posted, what we thoughtour biggest problems with our profession were.
At any rate, I'm not sure that I want the process slowed down for those that are only mastering ID becausea holocron told them too. Why would wewant players who think the profession is lame to begin with, playerswho'll never hang onto the profession after they've mastered it, to have it take longer than it tookus to master it? What's the point?
For those that are compelled to prove that this profession is soout of hand with how fast it can be mastered that they'll stock up on spice and master it three times so they can come back and post their fastest time, perhaps spices should be made to have no effect on mindwhen it comes to using ID skills. Would that help? Don't know how likely it would be that anyone will dig into code to make that happen tho'.
Frankly,I'd rather justconsider the topic of this thread. So I'll stress that perhapsmy highestexpectation for an ImageDesign Correspondent is that theybesomeone who'llask, beforeState of Profession drafts are offered to the dev's,for player input andopinions on topics other thanones that they're personally championing. Something a little bit more well rounded for the nextgo, please.
Simply put, all I expect or ask of our Correspondant is to relay our concerns to the Community Manager or however they (SOE) manage the Correspondant program.
Anything else is fluff and quite often, not necessary to the task of relaying our concerns to the staff.
Rough Kwee? The only way I could have made it rougher was to coat it in glue and roll it in sand. ![]()
I don't feel I should post what I expect of the ID Corres. as I'm leaving ID. I will say that I'm glad to see positive, and possibly productive, thoughts popping up here. I wish you well guys'n'gals...and here's hoping IDs get more hairstyles soon. ![]()

A correspondent represents what we want.
To this end, he or she must comminicate with us on a regular basis to find out what we want. He or she must ask questions, to find out what we want. He or she should sollicit feedback when making a compilation. The list submitted to the devs supposedly represents what we want. Communcation in the process is necessary so that the list actually reflects what we want.
When that is done, he or she must report to the devs what we want, not what he or she wants. It is not the correspondent's job to singlehandedly fix the profession - the correspondent is our mouthpiece. It should be obvious that the correspondent, as our spokesperson, should not betray the community by fraudulently representing his or her own personal agenda as the wishes of the community. Yes, the correspondent should be knowledgible about the profession, and know how to identify the pertinent issues- but ultimately the correspondent is there to report our consensus on all the issues, and prioritize according towhat we think is important. The developers can always second-guess or reject our community's suggestions, but the correspondent should not re-prioritize the issues or make the call on whether we are right or wrong, reasonable or unreasonable,in our requests or opinions.
The correspondent should respect the wishes of the community in all matters. It is not the correspondent's job to decide what is "best" for us, in a paternalistic/maternalistic fashion. The correspondent is no more experienced or knowledgable than any of us. The title is not meant to confer decision-making power.
Having said this, it should not matter whether our current correspondent believes that she has or will do a good job, or that we will ultimately be better off with her retaining her position. The community has spoken. Perhaps we will be better off with a new correspondent, and perhaps not, but that is for us to decide. In being a mouthpiece for the community,a correspondent, on any issue such as this, should put it to a vote to determine what the wishes of the community are (so as to make sure it is not a very vocal minority). Then he or she should abide by those wishes - after all, the correspondent's job is to at least attempt to get us what we want.

I agree with all of the comments and suggestions of what an ID Correspondent should be with the exception of Reiella's. While she may believe that all the correspondant need do is relate our wishes to the devs, I believe that the correspondant should a) ask what those wishes are before deciding for us and b) relate to us what the devs ideas are on the subject. I don't mind if I read once a week every week an update on what new tactic has been used to get us noticed and how it still isn't working and there still isn't anything new to update us on as long as I hear SOMETHING. I strongly agree with Kwee on that point. We need to be informed of progress even when there is none. Also, I would love to see the FAQ's and a list of Image Designers on each server. It gets tiring seeing the same questions over and over again from Newbies and people involved in other professions who are interested in our profession. If there were a list of Q&As for them, we would only need to answer original questions, saving us time and keystrokes.

I would also like to nominate Kwee for the position of Image Designer Correspondant. Anyone second that?

I've been seconding that as long as I've been reading. She already does most of the job, anyway.
