Maybe the inside of those ships you can walk around in could work like cantinas and salons. That would actually be pretty cool.

Yep, that's what I read too. A seperate way of advancing in the pilot classes without using our current skill set. It get's more pilots in space that way.

Hopefully we will in deed be able to ID these new spiecies without JTL though.

One concept that may be employed here is similiar to the one used by PlanetSide before its expansion came out... Pre-patching the art content to clients over a month period so that the "Launch Day" patch isn't too cumbersome [both on the client and on the patch servers].
