Well I knew the super-secret for a while now (being on TC too) but it's really interesting to hear that point of view. It's a different world out there just by picking an online gender. One day maybe I'll try being a guy (/emote scratches self masculinely and grunts)

Don't forget to spit too. That helps.

I too have played an attractive female dancer, and let's say I got a lot more tips with her being a novice then I did when I was a male Master Entertainer with BE clothes LOL. Sad but true

and by the way syzygy, great article. I attempted to play a female 'toon' once but after about a half an hour of roleplaying it i just felt icky and i couldn't do it. Perhaps i was doing it for the wrong reasons and that made me feel uncomfortable. I intended to do just as you had initally set out to do, see if i could get free things based upon the appearance of my avatar. After being handed 10k not even 5 min after i was on corellia i got a bit unsettled by the experiance as the player asked about me out of game.... and i lied.

anyways i liked the article very much and its pretty insightful as to character interactions and roleplaying.

Thankfully, I can honestly say that I've never lied about my out-of-game self—I have refused to answer questions, and I have been purposefully vague so as to allow the listener to assume what they want…but I've never flat-out lied.

Hmm. On those occasions a person gets too intimately inquisitive or steps beyond my limits of role play and/or insists on getting too personal OOC- I go completelyOOC and tell the truth big time. It's my best anti-cyber-seeking, foul-mouthedfool deterrent. I flat out tell them, yes, I am a real girl. In fact, I am a 45 year old girl, married 27 years, mother to three sons and and am playing this game with my oldest son and daughter-in-law. You'd be amazed how fast that usually turns a /drooling /licking fool into a polite person. "Oh my god! She's someone's Mom?!" Yeah, I am. I eat little boys for lunch. I crunch their bones and wear their skulls as a necklace. Raaarrrr! And if they just insist on being an a$$ and can't keep a respectful and polite manner when speaking to me, welcome to my ignore list and a harrassment report.

I love males, in general. Everything about them. They are adorable, even when they are being very, very male. Heh. But I will not put up with any behavior that makes ME uncomfortable. Ever. Not ever.

The last time I reported someone it was because he was being an @$$ to everyone in a buff line. Generally whining and mouthing off—at the time I was playing Melva, my female Bothan Master Brawler/Master Swordsman/Teras Kasi Master/Fencer Dabbler toon. I finished waiting in line—about a 10 minute wait—then powerboosted, dropped two brandies, tossed on the 80% kinetic composite, walked up to him and /duel'd. He made some disparaging remark about armor, so I took it off and told him that if he was going to mouth off he'd best be ready to put his money where his mouth is. His reply was "Go lick your nuts dog girl." /report;/say Well, a report isn't as satisfying as deathblowing you would have been, but it'll have to do. And off to Yavin I went.

i like to flirt with people that i know are mothers, i like to think that they enjoy knowing that people find their personality enjoyable and attractive. Heck i flirt with a 50+ yr old woman in my office (i'm 24) just for fun and she gets a kick out of it. I don't feel i'm doing this because i think anyone needs this but i just know it generally gets a smile out of people and if i can make someone smile at least once a day then i know i've made a slight impact on their life.

and yeah, after i played that female character and lied about myself OOC i haven't touched that chracter again. I don't delete it as a reminder as to who i want to be when i play this game and how i want to treat other people and also be treated in turn.

Once I played a female character in EQ as part of a sociology experiment conducted by my university (well, by my professor. The University didn't really sponsor it). It's really enlightening to see things from the other side.

I feel that I can speak from experience and say that the gifties really do happen. Before I assisted in the sociology experiment I had played many most of the previous MMOs and never played a woman. Very rarely did I get free stuff, and what stuff I DID get was mainly because I impressed a random roleplayer with how I played my character. As a woman, though? Constant streams of gifts, flirting and come-ons. My way of dealing with people who got a little too frisky was to tell them that I was "happily married to my high school sweetheart" and that said husband "was fine with RP, but drew the line at having online relationships."

As part of the experiment I was not allowed to tell anyone that I was male, and to this day I would be completely surprised if any of my Guildmates at that time knew I am really male. I felt bad about lying to them, but it was fascinating to find out how people treat you differently when their perceptions of you change regarding gender.

Yeah, you don't think about it on the boards. I always presumed I came off as ridiculously female, but the GCW correspondent seemed to think I was a guy. Well... after he saw me at fanfest, he changed his mind /snicker.

Actually, I find that unless someone on the boards makes a gender-defining type of remark, I don't tend to think of gender at all. In the game, it's hard not to make that snap assessment based on the avatar they've chosen, but on the boards, it doesn't really spring to mind unless it's wagged in front of my face, so to speak.
