Okay…I see a lot of people talking about what Image Designers are and aren't. I used to be one of the pack that said "we make people pretty, end of story." But I think it's abundantly clear that we're not going to be amking people any prettier than we can right now for a very, very long time. With that in mind, let's open ourselves up to other similarly artistic pursuits.
I say give us nose art! Let us color anything and everything we can get our grubby little paws on. Rotation? All for it! In other words: I'm desperate. I'll take any aesthetic content I can get, and to HELL with stat migrations.
LOL
I still have to respectfully disagree. I completely understand where you're coming from. I definitely understand the desire for new hairstyles and whatnot and how it looks like it may very well be an extremely long time until we get that.
Having said that, I'm extraordinarily concerned that the design ideas for ships are severely stepping on the toes of those professions who logically and rightfully deserve them...the crafters, artisans, and shipwrights. If for some odd reason these professions didn't exist, then I would 100% agree with you and say the next logical step would be Image Designers. But, that's not the case.
I'm all for trying to figure out new and exciting ways to add to our profession in the expansion, but I don't want to step on the toes of the crafters in the process. Tattoos for pilots of a specific rank is a great idea to that end. A military haircut that only pilots of a specific rank can wear is another suggestion. How about playing off the idea of holoemotes and be able to create certain projections for disguises of people? I've always liked the spy role idea that various entertainers talk about from time to time. Being able to make people blend in with various alien races. Perhaps there'll be quests of some sort where we have to talk to people over the com's in space. Disguising our voices, translator modules for alien languages, that type of thing. These are all just off the top of my head here. But, I think there are a lot of neat ideas some of us can probably come up with in regards to identity and disguise. Granted, they're probably lofty ideas that won't ever get implemented, LOL. But, nonetheless, even though the devs even seem keen to the idea of us designing ship art, I really kind of think that belongs with other professions, and I hate to see them miss out because it was given to us instead.

My personal view of Image Design is that we are the artists and stylists of SWG. As such, we focus on the external appearance of things. In the base game, this means how players look. In the expansion, you won'tsee players very much, you'll see SHIPS.As such, I think it is entirely appropriate that we use our artistic skills to decorate/design the look of ships.
After all, it is *not* the manufacturer ofa plane that decorates it historically, it is the pilots, crew andground crews that add personal touches such as nose art on fighters, tail art on bombers, etc. I think this would be a great thing for us to be able to do in JtLS.
I agree with you BUT I feel the devs would not give us anything that we can be artistic with. Despite the overwhleming proof the MMORPG players love to be able to have unique looks. The current dev leadership would be very happy if we looked like clones. Player will has some ablity to give their ship a unique look via adding weapons and shields, and maybe a limited color pallette like speeder have. but nothing that would give a true artistic feel. So I have to say NO to being a ship artist

i dont get it.
Could you give me the rationale why plastic surgeons would paint stuff on starships ? Wouldn't it be more logical to allow us to useour skills on every living creatures (pets, npc vendors, faction followers) ?
And i'll repeat it until it gets into some higher up skull : turn ID into an advanced medic profession, you'll have coherence, content, and a clearer concept for the profession.

Very true, but that's hardly the extent of ID skills.
Not that I necessarily agree that it should be a medical profession, just stating
Look under some of the body changes [Height, Torso] and alot of the face changes [rhinoplasty, chin/jaw/cheek changes].
Earlier today I've made what I think is a rather strong case for why ID should not be a medical skill. Here's the link:
