Indeed a good question, could we not have an upfront "consulatation fee" that the client is required to pay before we even begin the ID process? Once they have paid the fee we can then continue with ID session and then deduct the consulatation fee from the final price, this way we don't loose out to those obnoxious people who, as you say, leggit!!

Im not an image designer ... but my bestest buddy on the game is. She absolutely loves doing Image Design. She is aslo working on Chef. But what I have seen her do is this .. and this might not be for everyone. Nippit is VERY silly and chatty and her ID is more entertainment than anything. Just like a real life beautician, she is gabby and friendly and gets to "know her client". When someone is rude to her, she will flat out charge them I guess. But when hanging around with her while she works on people, I have noticed her one comment ... "tip me whatever YOU feel it is worth to YOU". Sound scary? Well, its not. It causes "mature and helpful" people to think about it. Humm, what was this worth to me? Nippit says that on the average she makes about 10k a design. That is from a simple haircut to a body makeover. She has been tipped as little as 1k and as much as 200k. She finds that people commonly tip her about 25k - 50k. She is making a great living. Her philosophy is that she does it for fun and just plain enjoys it. She says she has had very few people stiff her, and the ones that do are just immature, rude little brats. (her words not mine )

So while her approach might not be for everyone, it certainly works for her. It is relaxing, fun, and makes the person think about what THEY feel about paying. You wont always make big bucks, but you will always get repeat business because the person isnt feeling the presure of a commited price. Its just something to think about.

I have often thought about diddling with image design. Im a Master Dancer, Master Politician .. yes yes, the dancing Mayor! LOL I dont think I would have enough points to master it .. but is sure looks like fun. I appreciate what you guys can do. So if I ever use your service, be assured, you will always be paid WELL !! I'veNEVER been stiffed as an ID. I think I may be the only one. Either I'm naturally an intimidating person, or I'm so heinously bitchy that they give me money so I'll shut up.

Currently I use the "Tip me whatever you feel my work is worth." I make on average 10-30k and have received tips as high as 500k! So it really depends on who you're dealing with and the maturity of the customer. I get stiffed every so often but I don't let it phase me. I make a living, I am far more well off than others and I do it for fun :] Money really isn't an issue to me so I'm pretty apathetic to how much I receive in return. Every once in a while I'll get one of those really annoying/stress-inducing customers that I have no problem charging. But thankfully, that is a rarity as of late!

I don't care about being bitchy when it comes to getting paid for services I provide. I'll be damned if I'm gonna let people stiff me for the hard work I've put in to make their character look good.
