Thread: Why can't I be a barber?

IDing is pretty cool, aside from the bugs and lack of content. I wanted to try it out since I started the game. I got novice ID a long time ago, got XP for a lot more, but i gave up novice ID and I'm dumping the ID tree shortly.

I always wanted to be a barber, though. So, I wondered, how could I do this?

Notice that the title of someone who masters the ID tree in Entertainer is "Hairstylist"?

Notice that the hairstyling tree of ID is "Expert Hairstylist?"

Why not change "Hairstylist" to "Barber"?

Barber is not a male-only term. Barber is defined as one whose profession is to cut hair and shave and trim beards. Women and men alike are barbers. Not every term has or NEEDS a female counterpart. Barber is a unisex term.

To Chao:

Hair stylist is a uni-sex term, so why would he want to be a barber then?

Answer: Because traditionally Barber has been a male title not female,,females sometimes work in a barber shop, but rarely call themselves barbers. And if you took a survey of 1000 players and asked this question: Who is the barber ,,either Joe or Mary? I would think Joe would win 90-95% of the votes. Ask another question: Who is the hair stylist ,,,either Joe or Mary? I would think Mary would win 60-80% of the votes.

Its notjustdefinitions but also common perceptions,

I guess you just gave away the answer; we can do more than just cut hair and shave and trim beards in that tree. Why settle for a lesser title?

Ju, I was making the point, though, that it's not a male-only term. Barber, to me, sounds better than "Expert Hairstylist". Which is probably why he wanted it, NOT because it's more masculine. Some feminists need to stop getting their dander up so easily in my opinion. It'd be like me jumping on anyone who wanted a more "straight-sounding" term for this or that, etc etc.

Those aren't titles. They're names of the boxes. Titles are what you earn after attaining the fourth box in each tree. Hairstylist for IV in Entertainment, Expert Hairstylist for Hair IV in ID. May want to research before you speak, that sort of thing makes you look rather stupid.

I said it made you look stupid, not that you were stupid. There's a difference.

I agree about sex-specificity. What sounds better is in the ear of the beholder [sorry, couldn't resist ]. Its not possible to have much discourse over matters of taste. Denotation however....my merriam-webster online gives a definition for barber which is almost identical to what you provided. However

Main Entry: hair·styl·ist
Pronunciation: -"stI-list
Function: noun
: HAIRDRESSER; especially : one who does creative styling of coiffures

I think creative styling of coiffures comes much closer to capturing that tree than cutting hair and trimming beards. Especially since we don't have real facial hair just colored skin

My big title beef is with personal trainer. Where in hell did that come from? I'd rather be a plastic surgeon than an aerobics instructor!
