Thread: Image Designer Update for Publish 8
"Hair accessories: Coming in the form of particle enhancements to existing hairstyles" - Pubish 8 preview
Does this mean when Pubish 8 gets released it'll upgrade our characters hair so it'll blow in the wind? and not look like plastic video game hair. ![]()
I was thinkingparticle effects would be in the mini publish and not 8, because it did not make sense to add them in the current UI, then reprogram them into the new UI.

Well, I disagree that the hair in the game looks "plastic", but I will agree that getting that "wind blown" look is tough ![]()
The truth is, I don't know if this is making it in. Last I heard, this is something we wanted to do, but there is a lag issue. If all the players in any given area are using particle effects at the same time, then frame rates are going down to the basement. Some things are possible, but not anything that is persistent. Any persistent effect has to be "optimized" so as to reduce the amount of necessary data that has to go back and forth between the server and the client.
On the bright side, we've been able to put a lot of "ID infrastructure" in, so if the particle effects that are in the game turn out well, we will be able to add things like this for the future. In any event, what I would expect is more of a temporary thing (which is actually better for IDs in the long run anyway). That is to say, get a particle effect from an ID, go play with it for a few hours and then *poof* and if you want another, then you will have to go visit an ID and get another one ![]()

The temporary particle effect thing a) sounds cool and b) actually gives them a bit of possible repeat business. I'm quite happy for them.
Beating up on the Squad Leaders is one thing, but these are helpless Image Designers ![]()
