Thread: If you had to choose...
The ability to tank (defense, the ability to stay alive for a long time) for someone or something
Or the ability to deal out outrageous dps (at the expense of defense, of course)
Which would you personally prefer? The reason i ask is because these seem to be the two biggest points of view in the "what should swordsmen be?" thread. So, all other factors aside, given only these two choices which would you choose?
Pikeman should really have the role most swordsman have now. They have the largest, heaviest weapons and they are the ones that should really be the heavy hitters. Sure a powerhammer is heavy and hard hitting but compared to long virbo axe?
To me, swordsman is a combination of offense and defense. Kendo, "The way of the sword" is IMO an example a Master two-handed swordsman techniques. Derived from actual Samurai technique, it focuses on striking your opponent with strength and precision, but also stresses learning to counter any move your opponent may make against you.
In SWG terms like this....
Fencers - Highest melee/ranged defense, fairly high dodge, low toughness.
Pikeman - Low melee/ranged defense, fair block but a good toughenss mod.
Swordsman, decent melee/ranged defense, highest passive defense mod (counterattack) and fair toughness.
Right now I kinda think we are filling the pikeman role of being the heavy hitters with low defense and I don't really see how that makes sense. I wouldn't mind sacrificing a little bit of damage for some better defense or specials that have some status effects.

I have to say that both are essential Swordsman characteristics, but not in the extreme:we areeasy to hit due to low meleedefense, yet we can take a hit due to our medium toughness. And our damage is decent, especially vs. armor or groups of enemies.
But, if I had to pick one of those choices, I'd go with the big damage. A lack of toughness or tankability can be fixed with armor... but if you'relow on damagedue to bad weapons or low speed, you'rescrewed no matter what.
i think we should be the damage dealers, which in all ways is a sort of tank, we go in and level the field, for everything else, we may not be able to stand in battle as long as a defensive tank, but we wouldnt have to, we would be able to finish the fight before it really starts in some cases, and our defense would be our powerfull damaging offense. that is how i see us swordsman.
and also in pvp i liked the damage bonus we got against some ranged fighters, i figure a melee fighter that can get into melee range with a ranged, should be able to finish the fight in 1 to 3 hits, not just swordsman, but all melee fighters. and that is against all ranged fighters, and the bonus the ranged get is the ability to attack us from 60 meters away, and if they dont manage to kill us in that distance, they can feel the cold, cold ground.
Expanded pallette. That's what people want, and we need new content.
I'm also thinking that the hair color bug is hard to fix for whatever reason. Strangely, when I created a vendor with gray hair, it looked brown to everyone else. This fixed itself after server reset. Clearly this problem goes beyond image design.
However, I would have to demand eye shape and male (twi'lek and zabrak) freckles first. For the powers that be to ignore easily-fixable bugs in order to push through new content to satisfy the masses, I find that inexcusable. They fixed twi'lek eyebrows easily (the code is in character creation, after all) they can fix this!
