it seems that SWG is starting to come off the downswing itwas experiencing yet it still seems like theres no one playing. more people are playing yet it still seems as if the servers are empty. Has SOE thought about doing server mergers to try and solve the issues of deserted servers? most cities are deserted with the exception of coronet. if the servers were more populated it would give the feeling that the game was alive again because honestly i'm sick of having to PvP against the same 25-30 imps or go to the same city all the time to get buffs. what do you guys think?

well. It is quite a techincal challenge to merge servers. The reason being is that you have houses and buildings all over the galaxy that would be in conflicting locations.

yep this is what i was thinking. would it be possible for soe to deed all player structures (with items inside them) then let the house be placed for items to be retrevied?

that and city limits per planet, but i think merging would be a very good idea, if it could be done. Thats one of the main things that seems "wrong" in this game, and that is the lack of population.

Even if server merging could be performed (which I highly doubt it can, referring to the reasons above)it wouldn't have the effect you are probably thinking of.
Instead of it filling up unused NPC cities you would simply end up with twice as many people standing around in Coronet starport. This is because there is nothing in those unused cities to entice people into visiting them. If the devs could address that problem by adding something unique and useful to each city then the population problem would solve itself without the need for a server merge.

He's right, I play on Bria (the most populated server) and there's about 200-250 people in Coronet or Theed yet Doaba Guerfel (or however it's spelled) has not a single soul around (know that from visiting the Inv. 1-2 BH Infomants there).

SOE have merged servers before in other games.
It will happen.
I goto Bria and am amazed at all the people. We do not need all these servers. I hope the start merging them soon.

If you are referring to games like Planetside then that isn't a very comparable example. Consider these things that have to be taken care of in SWG if servers were to be merged:
- Character name conflict
- Influx of credits into the economy
- Conflicting house locations
- Introduction of more player cities onto planets that are already capped
- Conflicting serial numbers on crafted items
And probably dozens more that I haven't thought of. SOE already has a character transfer service in place, and if you look at how little they are actually able to do when transferring a character (basically just copying over skills) and considering it is so complex that they have to charge you money forit, that pretty much highlights the complications with such an operation. I wouldn't expect server merging to happen in SWG, ever.

Lol, I started out in Doaba at release and there were plenty of people around to go in hunting groups and dancers in the cantina. I stayed there probably for a month until I got enough credits and courage to explore to Tyrena and Coronet. Those places were an order of magnitude more populated than they are today. Friendly people all around sharing each others experiences.
Technical reasons as mentioned prohibit merging of servers. The real cause of the problem of course though is the negative flux of people (largely denied or hidden) due to NERFS, UNBALANCES, & BUGS (NUBs). Things have gotten better lately (except for the graphics which were recently lobotomized) and there is hope with the upcoming CURB, but let's just wish it's not too late and that SWG hasn't reached critical implosion mass.
