I’m looking for a little advice from the forums, and I’m hoping you guys can help me out.I have been playing SWG for about a month and half now.I mastered my first profession this past Friday night (Marksman) and I’m completely addicted to the game and the entire realm of Star Wars, much to my wife’s frustration, I might add.Up till now, I have been dabbling in a few professions that would help make me as self sufficient as possible.I spend most of my time soloing but have enjoyed the occasional group adventures.Currently, I am a 0/2/2/2/ Brawler, 0/2/0/2 Entertainer, 4/4/4/4/ Marksman, 1/1/2/1 Medic and a 3/2/2/1 Scout.I have never really had any focus as to where I wanted to go with my character, I have just enjoyed playing the game.I always just kind of figured I would play a bunch of professions and not really worry about specializing, until now.Since mastering Marksman, I have been paying closer attention to my skill points. At one time I thought 250 points were quite a bit, but I am now worrying that I may have to start giving up skills in the near future. My problem is that I’m not completely sure where I want to go next.Commando, Bounty Hunter and Ranger have all crossed my mind but after spending a bunch of time reading through the profession forums, I’m more indecisive than ever.I’ve also thought that I might like to get into the droid or weapon crafting business, or maybe go after Teras Kasi master since I’m always in awe of them when I see them whooping some butt.In the beginning, I had planned to work towards Jedi, but I have heard that’s a lot of work and not really as cool as it seems and I have no idea where to even begin looking for a holocron. As far as my style of play goes, I prefer soloing, as I mentioned, I have so far not participated in the GCW or PvP combat.I would someday like to get involved in these things though.I’ve spent most of my time on Tatooine and Dantooine but I’ve recently been getting the travel bug so I may be venturing out more.

I know that where my character goes and what he does is entirely my decision, I am just wondering if anyone can maybe point me in the right direction and perhaps suggest a hybrid or elite profession that they think might be right for me so I don’t continue wasting time and experience on a profession that I might want to get rid of soon.Any opinions are much appreciated.

If you are a soloist I suggest you have at least Novice Medic and Novice Scout. I would suggest 3000 in Scout for terrain negotiation.

If you are into player-vs-enviroment (PvE) fightning (not PvP) you have several choices:

First, do you like melee or ranged fighters?

If your a melee kinda guy I would suggest Swordsman or TKA for a great PvE build. This you can combine with Fencer to build a great tanker type character.

For a ranged fighter professionsRifleman is the strongest. Good choice. Carbineer and Pistoleer works too.

Mastering oneof the above professions allows you to master one more. Pick up Creature Handler and combined with an elite fighting profession and you have a good PvE build.

You could instead of picking up CH pick up Doctor so you can take care of your wounds and buff yourself (very handy).

Of the Hybrid professions, Bounty Hunter or Commando, Bounty Hunter requires signifiant time to level. Both professions are pretty good in PvE fighting though. Both professions are very fun too I would say (been both).

Hope that helps a bit.

I went through the same thing you did when I first started playing, so I'll give you my 2 cents. It all really matters on what personal style u like for combat. Try to master one of the elite ranged and melee profs, and see where you fit. Try master swords/master rifleman, or pistols/tka. They will help you figure out if you prefer melee or ranged. If you like both, however, you will be limited as to what other things you can do due to the large amount of SP you will be using. Secondly, ask yourself how self-reliant do you wanna be. Do you wanna have buffs at any time you want? Then master Doc. Do you want to harvest meat/hides? Dabble in scout. Do you want to heal ur BF easily? Get nov. entertainer. It's all about personal preference. If I were to recommend something for ya, I would do something like:

TKM (best all around melee prof.)

Master Brawler (intimidate 2 - handy in PvP and PvE)

Fencer 4440 (good def)

Scout 3000 (terrain neg.)

Medic 3040 (heal your buffed self w/uber med use 40 Stim E's)

This doesn't have any ranged attacks, but fencer will keep you safe. I would recommend using some character builder so you can see where you want all your skill points and map out how far you wanna go so you don't waste time leveling something you can't use later. I would recommend Kodan's SWG Calculator on www.bloodfin.org. Good luck

The first step is definitely to identify your favorite play style. I think that Ranged Professions definitely take a little bit more tactical ability than melee professions, if you plan on hunting alone.

Also, do you plan on mostly PVE or PVP? If you PVP definitely go Teras Kasi Master, Master Fencer, and Pistols 1-0-4-0. You will max out dodge, and have decent stun damage from both your Stun Baton and a Geo Blaster. If you intend to PVE, thats a bit more complex in my mind...

TKM is definitely the most well rounded melee profession, and Meditate is a major plus in terms of self sufficiency. But it is limited to only Armor Peircing 1, which can be a downside. If you want to do commando, TK is a good complement to is. A Flame 4 &TKM combo would deal out major damage and still give you61 skill points with whichyou candabble.

If you like melee, probably the most fun I have had is Swordsman. AP2 as well as blast and kinetic damage isa very good thing.

Really, there is so much that can be said about all the different professions. I would pick up novice brawler, and play around a bit and get a feel for what you like the best.

Gosh, that was scattered... I hope my post made sense!

Like the previous posters said, you first need to figure out your playstyle preferences. Are you a melee person, and ranged person, or a person that likes a little of both. As far as PvE goes, the combo that I like the best, and was very powerful in both PvE and PvP was master swordsman/master fencer/master brawler/TKA 4300/novice medic (could go TKA 4003 too if you like).

Beyond that, if you really like ranged, then rifleman is still the most powerful. It can be combined with doctor or a melee prof to add power. You could also dabble in BH to pick up good weapon skills to augment the other profs. For example, BH carbine line with master carbineer, or BH pistol line with master pistoleer. These are both very good. The carbines may be a little stronger in PvE since you'll have a AP2 weapon.

Good PvE ranged/melee combo builds could include: 1) master rifleman along with any of the 4 melee profs. (most people don't use pikes with this, though pikes aren't that bad) 2) Commando/TKM, 3) carbineer/swordsman

If you're talking PvP, then some of the templates might be different. These are by no means a complete list of good PvE builds, but are just some that I've found to be decent.

I don't second the "full melee" PvP template at all, ranged fighting does require more tactics, but it's ranged. I have a full ranged PvP template and full melee, defense stackers are my favorite breakfast.

as you mastered marksman, you seem to go for ranged over melee, then you got a few possibilities to be efficient in PvP, those would involve some of the following combos:

BH -carbines- and carbineer skills
BH pistols - and pistoleer skills
BH carbines/pistols - and carbineer/pistoleer skills (what I have currently)

Rifles

and you got a great efficient combo, very cool for new players, it's the "triple master"

TeraKasi Master / Master Smuggler / Master Pistoleer

One of the best PvPer I've seen out there had a nice template, without master boxes (just like mine) wich involved:

Novice commando (to use the launcher pistol)
Smuggler Dirty fighting line (last ditch special attack and low blow/KD)
Pistoleer's skills (dunno exactly wich ones)
and probably TKA's meditate and defense lines

actually, I played (not powerground/dropped) ALL combat professions ingame including hybrid and "not real" combat such as CH, or Combat medic. and PvP'd with all the FOTM templates out there. and my current template turned out to be by far the most efficient one, but as said, it involves tactics and smart playing, u can still try it out, a few players already did and they got all surprised about how efficient it is in PvP situations.

Bounty Hunter 0440
Pistoleer 0044
CArbineer 3440
Rifleman 0004 (only requires combat xp)

you can easily drop to

Carbineer 3420 and reinvest the skill points you got left in novice medic.

but I do think this template requires experience and knowledge about other combat professions to be really efficient, it's not an "I win" FOTM template, as most of FOTM focus on defense 70% defense and 30% offense, that template is more 50% offense, 50% defense so you'll need to be active and know what you're doing while fighting.

my main weapons for PvP are dxr6 carbine (against ranged fighters) and laser carbine (against full melee), and that template allows you to switch to some stun gun (geonosian sonic blaster) for the most critical cases. carbines let you land the best Knockdowns out there, and if the targed is armored you can switch to that geo blaster and use health fire specials, health targetting specials and/or mind targetting specials.

I’ve been playing Brawler for the past night or two and have actually been enjoying it a bit more than I did Marksman.I guess I’ll see if I still feel the same way once I master it.After that, I’m not too sure where I’ll go next. Esarod, thanks for the link to that character builder. That’s a very handy tool.

I will definitely refer back to them once I get a little more Brawler experience under my belt and have a more definitive idea of where I want to go and what I want to do.

See you all around!
