I recently took a break from this game, and whileI was gone, my house blew up with my Mark of Courage item inside. My question is, doI need the actual item to finish theHero questsor will the badge alone suffice? And if i do need the item, amI able to get it again by killing the bladeback boar for a second time?

I can't give you a definite answer sinceI haven't testedyour exact situation and I doubt many have.
However, I can tell you that after I talked to the hermit the second time and received the hero badge I was left with all four marks in my inventory. It is possible to drop them on the floor of your house where they reassemble into a single form.I think that they are meant to be a souvenir. If that is all they are then it is very likely you won't need them for the hero badge.
If you finish the other quests I would talk to the hermit and see what happens. I'll bet you will still get your badge.

You don't need the mark items to get the Mark of the Hero.
I know from personal experience. I've never received the Intellect item[did the quest pre-patch], and still bear the Mark of the Hero.
