I put exploit in quotes because it is totally within game mechanics yet can cause grief to other players.
If you are at a mission terminal and see an overt Jedi nearby, be mindful of them. They can secretly follow you to your destination. When your are in the heat of battle and if you decide to use an area attack, they can run into the line of fire/attack and you will gain a TEF, leaving you for virtual dead at the wrath of a lightsaber.
This just happened to me and I am not upset, just passing on some wisdom...

Actually, that DOES sound like an exploit ... non-Overt players should not be able to hit Overt players if not attacked first (or GTEF, or course).

Yea merrily. This is exactly what happened (except using fanshot.) However, I have respect for the jedi and his cleverness. I don't think we should cry nerf/bannage, only be more careful in watching our backs. It was kinda fun for the 3 (buffed) saber hits until I died.

You get the TEF for attacking the opposing faction, as over said.
However, I do not believe that covers when you attack a faction the Jedi is not a member of.

So if it's a knight, then he's perma overt--basically (assuming you're attacking npc faction members), you're attacking those faction npcs right in front of an overt member of the opposite faction. He doesn't need to jump into the line of fire--you are attackable by any overt member of the opposite faction at that point. He could've been a CM/rifleman and the same thing would've happened.
FRS has nothing to do with it--they only get FRS points off of other jedi knights or master bounty hunters.

I don't think that he's talking about faction missions. My "read" of this was regular missions, like nitches. The jedi gets nearby, and if you do an area attack within range of the jedi (of opposite faction I assume), then your area attack hits the jedi, and your TEF allows the jedi to then wipe you out?
If it was faction missions, then the jedi is like any overt imp. Doing faction and getting TEF'ed will draw a response, but I doubt that anyone would post about that on the forums since it is just the game's mechanics.
