but what do i type to get a

If you're using the graphical editor (which does have issues when you're not using Internet Explorer) there's a smiley face button in the toolbar to pick between several icons. If you're using IE and don't get the graphical editor, there's a "use graphical editor" link you can use, or you can check the "Use WYSIWYG Message Editor" box in your preferences.
