Okay - so you've got this far and opened this post, but you're still probably thinking - "What the hell is the point of this post?! It's obvious !"

Well, I would have thought the same myself, however a number of players seem to need help with this, or need to have explained to them the reasons why doing this is a good thing!

Okay, of the biggest areas for contention is Kill Stealing. For any n00bs who haven't yet hear this term, here's a quick description.:-

Kill Stealing is a totally legal, allowed with the EULA tactic whereby a player[1] attacks a creature or NPC already engaged in combat with another player[2] to the advantage of player[1],against the wishes of player[2].

Nowthiscan come in many forms, and there are several reasons ot do it:-

  • Loot

  • Experience

  • Griefing

Now Lootis wholly dependant upon whether you can outdamage the player you are kill - stealing from. Experience is lessof a contentious point - apart from Static Spawns (Which I'll go into later.)Now from a gamingpointof view SWG is agame, competitive in nature. So if you canoutdamage another player then you are within your rights to do that if youchoose to. However it will cause frustration, resentment, possible retalliation and can give you a bad name. The reason for this is the lack of courtesy, or politeness involved. It shows an inconsiderate, unempathising, selfish attitude to do it.It also should be bourne in mind that SWG is not balance as it stands at the moment. A Master Swordsman attacking a creature already engaged with a Master Carbineer has a distinct advantage at the moment. It's not the competition of two soldiers shootingat a target, attempting todamageit with similar weapons, it's more akin toa tank commander shelling a target, with aground trooper shooting at it with a low calibre pistol. Whatthis means is that regardless of the rules allowing you to do this and the licence saying it is ok - itisn't fair. If it's being done intentionally to detriment your play, then it is griefing and would be punishable - however the chances of you being able to prove that it's being done purposefully to detriment your game experience are very low indeed. If the player is gloating, sending you tells that highlight a desire to hurt your game time - then screenshots might go some way to helping you prove it - but it's going to be an uphill struggle, as far as I know nobody has ever been penalised for kill stealing, nor are they likely to be.

So now you are thinking , "Oh great, well I may as well start doing this!?" However I would encourage anyone not to. There are many reasons not to some more poignant than others:-

  • People talk about people in this game - if you get a bad name, people may stop helping you. Think about it - Doc Buffs, Entertainer Buffs, Stat Migration, to name a few, if a guild member makes a big enough noise about a kill - stealer then they may find it harder to get services.

  • By kill stealing you are saying load and clear that you find it acceptable and waiver any right to complain about others doing it to you. So that carbineer you kill stole from, who returns with 6 Master Riflmen and a Dark Jedi Enforcer, who steals your kills... Well...

  • SWG is by it's nature a social game. Alot of the interface is very focused on communication with other players, that means you can make something called freinds. If you politely offer help if you see someone struggling with a large beasty, you can often find a non-tangible reward in the friendship that you can acquire doing this.

So what about when someone does this to you? How should you address it? My advice would be as follows:-

  • Politely and respectfully request that they allow you to fight your quarry alone, and thank them for showing willing to help.

  • Failing this, explain what happened to your guild mates and friends, and if they agree this player was griefing, get them all to /addignore them, and/or report them to a CSR, preferably with screen shots and STRONG evidence that their intention was to disrupt your gameplay.

What I would suggest you AVOID doing is the following:-

  • Yelling expletives, it just makes you seem like an immature idiot, and will never get you what you want. Never, never, never, don't even try it. Shouting expletives will NEVER make people give you waht you want - particularly in an MMORPG where you CANNOT intimidate a player, as you CANNOT physically harm them.

  • Challenge them to a duel for the spawn, remember these people are outdamaging YOU or it wouldn't be a problem, duelling is not the correct way to solve this.

Something everyone needs to consider is this:-

  • Two players arriving at a lone krayt, and racing to get the first hit in, one winning by a fraction of a second- cannot claim kill-stealing when the second player hits.

Now alot players grind afk at the static spawns outside of Coronet, if all the spawns are taken it's common for a player to double up and go AFK next to an existing player. MY advice is don't do this, you won't get max XP anyway, and you are likely to make an enemy. If a player has been afk grinding and was killed - then I would take over their spot, as they may not clone for several hours if sleeping or working. If there are no spots free, then I would courteously ask each player if they are ATK and how long they intend to hold the spot for. 9/10 time someone will be AK and will probably tell you they are nearly finished and allow you to take over the spot.

Above all, when playing SWG, remember there is a real person behing the annoying composite clad villain taking your kills or spawn spot, a person who is likely trying to achieve much the same things as you! Like real life we tend to be able to achieve the most when we work together and co-operate with each other, and you might find you have more fun that way too!

Awesome. I agree 100% with what you've said here. There are too many immature, spoiled people around these days. Everyone does need to realize that there are real people attached to the other end of that character they see on-screen.

One thing though... using screenshots won't mean a lick of difference (as stated by SOE support). You need to submit a "/report <griefer's name>", to catch the logs text of the interaction, then submit a formal harrassment ticket with that person's name (IF you feel you are legitimately being griefed)

Cheers.

I know some people from my server who would benefit from reading this. Then again they are incapable of learning so maybe not.

I disagree, you will never find me playing nice when dealing with the opposite faction. If we had the ability to attack anyone outside the city limit, all your imp a$$'s would get pwned!

Ok so here is a question for you, a few days ago me and a friend of mine were out hunting kryats, we come across a swordsman attacking a canyon, we ask if he need help he says not so we sit back and watch. While we are watching another kryat spawn we attack the newly spawned kryat and he says that we stole the kill from him because it was HIS spawn. At this time he was still fighting the canyon that he was when we arrived, but was still demanding that we not attack the kryat that he was not even attacking. What would you call this Kill stealing or just killing a new spawn?

In that scenario I would say:-

  • You were unlucky to get a spawn right where he was, I can understand him being upset that people turn up when he thought he had the spawn tied up.

  • You were within your rights to take the Krayt, they are rare enough and time consuming enough to kill that you can't treat a Krayt spawn the same as a static spawn.

Ultimately this is a not a Kill-steal, but aclaim of Spawn Stealing - a different matter. Krayts can't really be considered static spawns though.

I suppose the best scenario would have been to offer to group with said player and kill several krayts with the take it in turns Loot option turned on.

Tough one to call though that...
