I am not condoning bad language in game but the filter is a mixed message at best.

Why is there a filter?

Does that mean it's ok to use cuss words? No, you get banned. What good is this filter?

SOE, take the filter out of game if you're going to ban people for using inappropriate language.

They can't watch all strings of chat on all servers all the time. It is there for people who don't want to see that stuff. If you don't like it, you can turn it off. Why in the world would they remove it?

I'm not sure why it's there either. It seems that if they wanted to prevent players from using obscene language, they could find a way to block a player's ability to type certain words. Of course, an easy way around that would be to spell it differnetly (a$$). I think SOE nedes to seriously look at their policy. They enforce it only when it suits them. Over the weekend, another player told my wife, "Has a fat man in an overcoat ever licked your..?"

That is beyond unacceptable or immature. My wife reported him, but there is no way to know whether anything was done or not. It was interesting to read though that as evidence, SOE will not accept other player's testimony, screenshots, or voice recordins as corroborative evidence. I guess they base it soley on the 100 or so lines of spatial that the system records when someone is reported.

The filter is there to protect players from the odd casual curse that they might not wish to here.

The policy is there for people who overstep the mark with exessive swearing or comments about men in overcoats.

Basically you're not gonna get banned for the odd swear word whilst you are out with your guildies but standing outside Coronet Starport spouting profanity or repeatedly messaging people with similar is gonna get you in trouble and saying that people can /filter it out is no defence.

There's a document somewhere from SOE explaining their attitude to this somewhere but I cann't be #$%£#'ed to look for it right now

==================================================================

No filter is perfect but just because you can get banned does not stop people from swearing. Thus the filter offers you the opportunity to avoid most swear words and other inappropriate words. I tend to consider people who intentionally alter spelling to get curse words past the filters worse since they are activly attempting to defeat the filter.

And what if (god forbid) we are roleplaying? We have to limit our character to a good clean little person? Sony puts slutty clothes and smugglers into the game, but they can't swear, or (and yes, my buddy was permabanned for just this) make an offhand comment about another character's mother? That's just silly!

*sarcasm*
Yeah, because the Star Wars movies were all filled with cussing.
*sarcasm off*

The Imps called the Rebels "rebel scum" not &*%&*#(&*(&#(*&%*(#@)&*#)&*&%(#&*@.

Yes this is a role playing game, but there are real people on the other end. Some of them don't want to put up with snot nosed kids saying, "W T F man, you suck.. I F'in pwned you b***h."

That being said, I don't think are going to ban anyone for using mild language. JTL missions say, "give 'em hell." What they care about are insults that are directed at people not their characters.

They put the filter in their to keep out the Bad Language, because everyone should know that lots of people in SWG are 1337 and casual swear all the time, making Coronet look like one of the "Tanacious D" shows. But as for me, I am u83r 1337, Sooo... yah.

lol, that sounds completely ridiculous. "an offhand comment about another character's mother"?.. and you are referring to swearing, meaning that someone said something about someone elses mother using curse words. In no roleplaying scenario would this, should this, or ever will this be acceptable.

You have to use common sense in how you roleplay, especially if you're going to be a little rough.
Punch, slap, spit on, calling thier mothers rotten rebel floozies. Some people may not like it but if you're doing it only for roleplay and they can see it, that's ok.
Spam punching and slapping, repeated harassment, peeing in peoples mouths, calling their mothers dirty f^#%&! w#*(%'s, NOT ok.

Use wise judgement in what between those examples you can use. If you think someone else will be offended then don't say it, else it's your choice to run the risk of being banned. Bypassing someones filter with a period or a space will just up your risk of offending someone. You can be reported for doing so since it is an intentional act to make them see your cussing infringing on thier choice not to see it.

In my friend's case there was no leet, one actual swear word but it was not modified to pass through a filter...it just plain came down to one person being offended and forgettinghow to/addignore. The game is intended for teen+ with a warning that game play may cause a higher rating...why should he have to lose his hard earned toon, and everything on that toon just because some jerk didn't like his character? He wasn't even given the chance to defend himself, just got kicked without warning. How is this fair? We pay $15 to play a game, not be monitored and fined like we were in the blessed NBA.

The filter can also protect any children that play, I've read about some parents who play with their kids. Also there is light cussing which most people don't mind, and probably won't get you banned. Or calling someone a name, or racial slurs which are bannable offenses. Not all swears are equal.

If my child was playing SWG I'd want the filter on.

If you don't like it, turn it off.

Yeah, all the guys who are happy with everything are playing the game
