Any rebreather you find in containers you will get that system messege, why, I have no idea. You can loot them off of Black Sun in the DWB (did it a few days ago). You use them in a quest to make a rebreather for resisting the alum gases farther down in the DWB, although right now, that is pretty much useless because the gases barely do you any harm if you are buffed.

Best to get them is in the geo caves, the room where they most likely spawn is in the room where all those lockers are. About 3 or 2 of them should be able to be opened and they should be in there. If not wait awhile and you should get it spawning in there.

I would like to add that while wearing a rebreather it take the place of your helmet, leaving a huge armor hole in the current system. So basically its useless.

I heard that you have to be an artisan with engineering II to loot the rebreather from containers - would like to know if this is true for just general knowledge
Otherwise - rebreathers are useless but may be more handy after CU.

I don't think that is the problem. What I believe the trouble to be is that the rebreather is a no transfer item. So when they stop it from being tradable it bugged it so you could not loot if from a locker or chest in the DWB.
I also believe that it takes eng II to modify the rebreather during the DWB quest to upgrade the rebreather. So, what good is to a master sword to try and do the quest?
