The amount of XP gained per kill is confusing me very much now. When I'm grouped, killing Pikets (typically level 80-82) on Dant, I get anywhere from 2,500-2,800 XP per kill, if I have an inspiration buff.
However, I hear all the time about people getting near 5,000 XP per kill, and while I was watching my roomie play today, he was getting 4,600 some Unarmed XP while killing Squills only one level above him.
Is there any reason why I'm getting so little XP? My roomie thought it may be because I'm using a weapon I'm not certed for (I can equip my Slugthrower Carbine, even though it's a level 50 cert, and I'm CL 33), but I'm not sure if this is true. Anyonehave some insight as to how I can get to the 4,000-5,000 XP per kill range? Thanks much.

I thought XP depended on your CL vs the creatures lvl. If you're CL 33 you'll get a lot less hunting lvl 80-82 creatures than someone that is, say, lvl 80.
Correct me if I'm wrong on this though

I think you are right. Generally the skillboxes costs less XP when your CL are low. Your XP will increase when your CL does...

Hopefully you guys are right. This whole 2,500 XP for enemies that used to give 5,000 is just annoying.

It's always been like that. If you're novice swordsman, you get less xp for killing a high level creature than a master.
