Thread: Why can't a Neutral trade with an Overt?

Is there some logical reason for this? I can see the logic behind a neurtal not being able to heal an overt because would would be quickly exploited, but how do trades effect anything? It only makes sense that a neutral should be able to trade with anyone. It can be very annoying. Anyone know the reason behind this limitation?

If you are covert in the same faction you can trade, but you get a TEF.

I always thougth it was a bit harsh though.

Any dealings with an OVERT means you are not covert/neutral....simple as that.

If somebody sees you make a trade in the back corner of a cantina with an OVERT, then how could you be viewed as neutral then?

I for one hope to never see this change.

In my mind, the whole idea of being an opportunistic neutral merchant would be so you can trade with anyone :covert, overt , neutral.

Fade In: Imperial Troopers tracking the rebel spy. His weapons are out of power, his armor is in tatters, he is on food and running out of food.

Neutral Merchant : hey fellow traveller, aren't you part of the rebellion?

Rebel Traiter: (pant) yes and I am being chased by stormtroopers, can I buy a speeder from you?

Neutral Merchant: Sure, only 3000 credits. Better hurry they are just down the street heading this way.

Imperial Commander: Stop Rebel Scum. Darn, that neutral merchant sold the traitor a speeder, oh well wacky merchant. (gives noogie to merchant) You silly rascal, now we have to go back and tell Darth Vader that we failed his mission. Boy do I have egg on my face. Have a good day neutral merchant. /waves

I agree, but the neutral merchant should pay the price: if he/she trades with an overt {faction} player, he/she gets a TEF against {other faction}. So in Leana's example, the merchant could sell the rebel a speeder, but would immediately be attacked by the stormtroopers for helping a rebel spy.

I suspect that this isn't done due to complications or limitations of the TEF system. If you're a covertfaction member, a TEF probably just acts as a time-limited overt state. Since a neutral doesn't go overt, it might be tougher (and more prone to bugs) to set a faction-specific TEF.

OK...I can see that situation... howeverif an Imperial Colonel comes by and wants to buy a dress for his concubine, Im not sure what he'd do when I shrug and say, "I don't think it would be wise to trade with someone like you."

Perhaps all he can say is :

Imperial Colonel : "You silly rascal. Have a good day neutral merchant." /waves

=)

We can come up with RP examples for and against this rule all day. Let me clarify my question a bit... is there some sort of potential exploit with allowing neutrals to be able to trade with overts?
