Open Notepad, copy and paste this
[SwgClient]
allowMultipleInstances=true
and save as "user.cfg" into your main SWG directory. Close and instances you might already be running, and try it out.

The D3D error tends to crop up when you try to launch the 2nd instance before the first has loaded. Best thing to do is wait until the first instance has completely loaded and your avatar is in the world, then tab out and launch the 2nd.

I followed these instruction and it tells me that another instance is running. I did have create the user.cfg file . I have confirmed that it is a .cfg file not .cfg.txt . Any suggestions?

Before running the second copy of the game, make sure you have another app open like ie for example. If you only have the first instance of SWG running and no other apps on the taskbar, direct x sometimes launches itself from the instance of the first copy and you get an error.

I have windows XP and I was able to get it to work by switching from one windows user to another one. It worked slick. You just have to have more than one windows users set up.

I'm going to guess that he ended up with file named user.cfg.txt...
The other trick that works with the DirectX crash is to log out of the first toon, to the char selection window and then start up the second toon. After it has loaded past the char selection area you can log the first toon back in.
