Thread: Just wondering what to do about some Newbie followers.

Hello,

Just was wondering if I could get some advice about a certain situation. There is this obvious newbie that had asked me for help as I was sitting in a Cantina getting BF healed up. Anyway, long story short I ended up helping him out with a mission, just to try to teach him something about the game. He didn't seem to understand -anything- about SWG at all.

Ok, so today when I logged on, I saw he was online, so I thought I'd say hi. I get to him and he's sitting with about 3 of his friends. All of them want to team up with me and go on a mission. Due to some inexperience and bad planning, we all ended up dead. However, it seems they really want me around to help them and get them started in the game. I'm no opposed to this, but none of them seemed to have any clue how the game works. How do I get them to learn about the game, while not seeming like I just want to shove them off? I'm plenty happy to help, but I don't want to see someone just sitting around until I come online then saying, "I want to be with you" over and over (yes that happens), I want them to enjoy the game alone a bit, just like I did.

This is on the Test Center server by the way (seeing that many people in one place can be rare).

Thanks

speaking from my experience helping new people (and ive helped quite a few) go over the basic chat functions (tells, group chat, spatial chat) and then have them do their droid quests (click & hold the green helper droid->Profession quests-> your profession)

hang out with them while they do it, toss in a heal if needed, but it really does a good job of explaining basics. answer their questions they may have while doing it...but the green droids really are useful for new players to learn simply and quickly

People new to SWG honestly don't belong on TC. Explain the difference between TC and live, and then strongly but politely recommend that they play the live game, where there are more people with more time to teach new folk the ropes. They may have come simply for the ability to make multiple toons, but that's not a valid reason to play there, in my opinion. They can't test very well if they barely know barrel from stock on a CDEF...

They may be waiting for you simply because it is TC and its hard to find people, you may be the only person they know.

Tell them to read the manual and then ask questions. Many of their questions are answered in it.

I'd have to argree with the previous poster on reading the manual. SWG isnt like most games. A good reading through the manual first is what most people should do. I try to help the "new" people out when they are asking good questions. But, when some one just tries gouping, dueling & trading with you and can't even spell or type properly this is where Idraw the line. I see so many people asking simple questions, that make them sound so young & inexperienced when playing. I think one of the big problems is there are to many "kids" playing that can't even comprehend the game let alone the system mechanics.

Just my 2 cents

I really enjoy helping the newer players out, as I remember how hard it is to be a noob. But I've kind of run into the same situations as you. I have helped a couple of people out, like taking them thru the warren when they really shouldn't be there at all. Ocassionally I get someone who decides that I'm going to help them with everything and they send me a million tells & are constantly wanting me to take them to do something. I try so hard to be patient & make time for them. But I am so involved in my guild, doing the village, trying to finish out my last prof & helping my friend make a new city. And they just don't understand that I'm really super busy, as they are still new & can't imagine being busy!

So what I did was I told them that I had a lot going on right now and to please feel free to send me emails with questions and that I'll answer them as quick as possible. And I'm setting one night a week to take them on a hunt somewhere. I do agree, that reading in this game is the most important thing you can do. Not just the manual, but get them on forums. I have learned so much off of the forums that I never would have learned on my own.
