I don't think anyone really knows (a week seems a little short to me). The only official announcement related to this would have been about the character purge, but that doesn't take effect unless you completely cancel the account and don't renew for 6 months. Since item ownership and creation, structure permissions, and bank contents are all tied to the character's first name, I'd think it'd probably be a while to give people time to reconsider. If the name got deleted, everything owned by that character would get deleted, and anything made by that character would have to get the "created by" tag wiped.
Maybe you can get a CSR response from the launchpad chat, or by opening an in-game ticket.

I deleted my first Jedi 8 months ago (or more) ago and still can't pick his name...

did someone else get the name before you did? add it to your friends list and see if it ever come online. cuz 8month is should be useable.

Wait if you quit game and dont renew for 6 months your char is permanently deleted?

how long after i delete a character does the name become availible to use again?
i created a character, and am using the name i have been using on the net for many, many years now.
i want to re-roll the character as a different race, but am afraid the name will be snatched up. i know it takes some time, as i have deleted other characters before, and the could not use the name as the server thought the character still existed, but i don't know HOW long the server believes the name is still in use.
does anyone know?

I do not know if it's been changed or not, but when the game first came out the 'policy' was that when a name is used it can never be used again. I haven't seen or heard anything about a change in policy regarding reusing names, but then again I haven't really looked either and I've only recently had my interest in the game revived.

Once a week there is a small database purge that removes all reference to deleted characters. That means that if you delete a character, it may take up to a week for the name to be available again.
However, if you delete a character and want to create a new character with the same name straight away, talk to a CSR in the live chat from the Launchpad and they will usually purge the old character straight away for you.
As for the other question, SOE announced that starting in October, once a month they will be going through the database and purging all characters that have been inactive for more than six months. Inactive means that the account has not hadpaid time. This means that if you paid for a years worth of account 1 August last year, then the account is active until 31 July this year, and you don't have to worry about the purge until the first purge after 1 February next year. Paying for any additional time (even if it's just one month) resets the inactive timer to six months after that paid for period ends.
As a result, if you are not going to be able to play your account for a long period but want to guarentee that your characters remain, pay for one month every six months.
