First start off at Y-8 Mining Guide (Working around the known bugs)

This will give you an overview of weapon loadout for your Y-8

Then go to Red-Dwarf Idiot's Guide to Space Mining

Really good guide to mining in general * golf clap * and one I apreciated having to help me out

Now for the known Bugs. ...

  • Having any player not of your space faction AND ROTW in your Y-8 ( or other POB ship ) ocasionally does not allow you to mine ( at all, no how, no way up to all slots other than pilot )

  • The tractor beam is associated with the current space location 0 0 0 ( go to location 0 0 300 for best view to get a screenie of your ship and point what part of your ship you want to 0 0 0 and hop in the tractor turret )

  • IF the space ore does not " glow " when fired on, either that is the wrong weapon, you do not have ROTW, or you have a POB ship and missing a pilot ( still won't let me mine solo in my NOVA ) or have a non ROTW player in your ship

  • Targeting from the pilot seat in the Y-8 is SUPOSED to be off center ( i find it easier to do pilot view and same level, just off to the left a little )

    • It is faster to mine in an X-wing than the Y-8 because you do have the tractorbeam.... Try to mine in a Z-95!! You will see that it is MUCH more ore per shot with the y-8 just really hard to steer, It's a huge ship that is supoed to drive like a tugboat, at least the devs got that right. It is also suposed to have the weird reverse steering when doing major speed changes ( from 300 to 1260 boost and boost just ended is an example ). That is realism! It is really bad if you don't expect that level of detail * golfclap the Devs on that one *

There are a lot of players that mine out an ore and leave it instead of emptying their capacitor so the " new to mining " player will come along, empty half a cap ( or worse, fire 2 shots and expect ores ) and post complaints. Be kind and blow the asteroids if you know they are tapped out PLEASE!!!

There are other players that try " stealing your ore ". I don't blame them with the 20 CPU i'm seeing ( and up ) on Infinity ( if they even stay listed ). I'm just polite to offer firing off 2 ores for you so i can get the one. The sooner your hold is full, the sooner you are out of my way and not bumping in to my X-wing with the 2 mining lasers and wing mounted tractor ( naboo, coro and tat only ).

Items still can be dropped, rotated, /move forward/backward, but not moved up/down. It just might be related to why NO POB ship i have has the access terminal working for any thing except move last object to my location ( sent bug on it ). I even cleared out the yaght, dropped a broken data pad in the top view area and tryed deleting all items, then tryed moving items to my location, and voila, broken data pad at my feet.

i doubt they will fix the 0,0,0, wp issue for a while cos SOE need to nerf stuff first before they fix anything, btw its nice to see someone posting a link to my guide on this forum and not the bootleg one on swgcenter.com cos im kicking up a stink about that atm.

The Quest to get the Y-8 starts with talking to Flash (the NPC's first name) in thecantina in the tree ( psst... /target flash ) you find he's stuck on the wookie world as the Imperials impounded his Y-8andneeds someone to take a message back to his boss. He will send you to his boss who will then send you on some simple mining missions, from there on i would recomend you are a pilot 3-3-3-3 as a minimum for completing solo. The missions near the end expect a group effort.

Do Not Sell Every Thing You Loot In Space While You Are Doing This Mission! I have a guild mate that did and lost both cargo holds you get from the mission and their mining lasers and was not finished the quest at the time. ( name withheld to protect the silly )

The mission starts you with a Mark I mining laser and a small cargo hold( 500 units) shipwrights can make up to 1550 for the large starfigher model ( did temporary skillsRespec and a whole lotta mining to deck out my Y-8 muahaha gotta love elite mining caps).

I was capped for ace at the time ( 4-4-4-4 and can't get any more XP ), used my combat x-wing prior to getting the heavy X-wing and will only recomend packing your combat weapons of choice for the trips as there are a few destroy missions you may want to ask a few friends/guild members to join you on.

You Do need to be Ace Pilot of your chosen space faction to fly it and all coms ( the front 2 seats ) have to be the same Space Faction ( only other rebles can set my droid commands as example ).

Hope they fixed the 0 0 0 waypoint camera for the tractor turret issue in the Publish 17.0

    It wasn't listed at http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Announcements&message.id=605

( hides the fact this is a post towards the magic numer so i CAN edit )

I believe give credit where credit is due. Narut0 has done alot of work getting the ( Specific to the Y-8 ) information as one list and with that list it has helped me ( and countless others that check the forums ). The 0 0 0 bug as it seems to be called ( hey you coined it in the last post ) i stumbled across as i recognised a Coro space asteroids in the field of view. So i turned on POIs until i saw the one in view light up and the rest is my experience in 386 ( yes DOS IS a programming language ) 3D attempts at what the space environment is/does and what is " default " if you mess it up.

One oversight in the " bugs " list ( on everyone ) that also might end up with the inventory not being able to be dropped and lifted is the collision space for the ship. The top where players moves is BELOW where asteroids, other fighters, etc can just fly until it hits something. The old term for that was either meshes or mapping ( diferent schools called it different names for the same thing, the outside as far as collision detection goes ). Forcing a map grid ends up with a 2D map in a 3D world ( what we currently have in the Y-8 ) and may just be what we need fixed in order to get items in and moved where ever we want in the ship. They did an excelent job on the other ships i have and have been in, this one seems... how to put it kindly... rushed?

This is fairly obvious when ( if you look at any ship ) when you equip a tractor beam, there is.... No graphic??!?! If you also check your inventory lately there are alot of Pre CU weapons that have things like Combat Level of use: 51( and no, that is not a typing mistake on my part for the round bracet. As i can ( lvl 55 in game ) equip a 51( weapon and lvl 50 can't there is some code to work around some of the database issues that may be why we have the tractor beam working in any ship that it is not a POV ( Point of View ) turret.

Hopefully this rant is ( at least ) getting some Dev's attention towards possible fixes and all i ask for my assistance in getting this ship to work as intended is 20 more skill points total ( and the 5 respec pointsi permanemty lost since you loose them going from master Doctor to master rifles and no skill points to use them anywhere )

dude i don't understand your guide, you're saying this is a guide for the y-8 but you're saying mining in an xwing is faster. Can you clarify your points for me... how do you effectively mine in a y-8, is it possible? or are you just telling us to not bother and get xwings...

OK, the points that are able to be used on both

    1) /target ( resource name ) and /target asteroid are usable on both

    2) the Y-8 still can't be used for speed of mining ( the loot tractor beam gives a turret that can target and nothing else on Infinity )

    3) using your non POB ship you can increase your speed ( and end up with the equivalent to the 5k ( reward small Y-8 )hold size by also using /follow.

Currently any player made tractor beam i have used in any of the 3 weapon slots ( on Infinity ) does nothing other than light up the asterod. The loot tractor beam in any of the slots similar BUT also gives a player controled turret. The small fighters do not have this issue and have a less yield per asterod ratio than the Y-8 and can compensate by speed in which they can gather the asteroids. As example, 3 asteroid pieces from iron 1 from Tatooien space yields 180-400 in the Y-8 ( custom Y-8 only Lasers ) versus the less than 200 with custom ( single ) Mark III on an X-wing. Dual mark III on an x-wing gives almost equal yeild per shot.

Hope that clears some of the confusion up and since the Y-8 drives like a tug, mines like a Z-95, might as well pass on how to mine to the best efficeincy as possible.

Ohhhhh..... 'bout a 1550 load in 12-15 min, and usually do around 20k a day. EvilQuinn and a few others are having to wait for me to finish off the padi trials at this time ( finaly got back to the forums )

Y-8 issues still needing to be addressed :

    • Tractor beam ( loot item ) turret will not actually pull ore IN to the ship, it will pull it up to, have it pass through Y-8

    • items can not me moved vertically. Feel free to slide it all over ( and out of the ship in one area of the ship ) and rotate the items, just do not expect it to be lifted or lowered

    • The Ability to change the standard crosshairs - one with the correct line added to the site would mean i can save a bundle on the lamps i place behind the left chair to assist with close targeting

    • Tractor Beam ( player crafted ) shows a view from your current space sector, location 0 0 0 facing 0 0 300

After extensive tests, solo and with 1-2 people it is almost as fast as a Tie for mining ( acording to a friend that is imperial ) when you forget which way is up.

    • place the top turret so the full arc will have the asteroids cross it's arc as the pilot shoots the ore

    • have the top turret /target asteroid and use that to assist in targeting

    • turn the ship " upside down " when attacked with tier 3 and up ships so the rear turret has a better fire pattern and use the asteroid as front cover ( it sits really nicely ON the asteroid by moving so the asteroid is under the front area

    • It drives like a tugboat, drive acordingly. Small turns for fine control, hard turns when you do not need to. High speed shifting will cause " reverse " steering in any craft ( It's realism for you, i HAVE piloted a tugboat.. for 30 min.. )

I'm sure there is more hints/tips to getting the most out of it, myself, Narut0 and others are just a few that have actually used it to mine
