which is why its a good idea to consider melee/ranged combos that have the same bonuses. fencer-pistoleer, carbiner-swordsman, pikeman-rifleman. they stack very well, and if you master both you'd have some good mitigation from both ranges.

and if im correct u might want to consider the other options available to u to enhance ure defences since melee and ranged defense are not dedicated to the weapon u use making melee/melee combos a good one also.
