I've got the sculpture and he tells me the families are happy or something, and i can train in the tree but it's not showing completed in the crystal itself. Anyone else experiencing this?

Its most likely completed. When you bring up the quest list, it shows all misions whether they are finished or not. There's a check box you can check to show only uncompleted missions. You should be good to go.
