There are 10 patrols with 8 waypoints I believe.
It tells you if you just look :/

ive done 10 so far...then he says good job and ends the conversation. then when i talk to him again he gives me more and says he can always use more patrols. did i finish the missions? or is there a definate end to the patrols? or will he just keep doing this endlessly? lol.

When you finished the first partol you completed the mission. The second time is for a reward. You get a pretty cool flag. But you DON"T have to do the second round. I think the second round is harder. The waypoints are farther out and seems like you have to fight a few more. But you only NEED to do it ONE TIME.

You just get a flag? After u did the second row of 10 patrols?

Just so you know, if you find a couple of Sith, fight them or you fail. If you get a system message that you see a raiding party, don't fight them. You will fail the patrol.

I completed the 10 patrols, he kept saying "I see you're back but that doesn't mean you have finished" and I was able to continue, I have assumed this means all was ok?

Here ia a funny for ya. I am doing the patrol missions coming in and not getting credit. This happened about 20 times. I would go up tell him I am finished and get 6 new waypoints. I am a little slow sometimes till I reread the crystal and it said all 8 waypoints. My data pad was full

How prophetic...and thanks for your contribution. I've been running these 5 stupid patrol points time and again, avoiding the strike force, thinking the "8 patrol points" was something left over from test. Yup, datapad full of waypoints at 5 patrols and pack now full of those stupid ores.
