yes through modding the music files. I won't say how b/c it's against the rules to do it.
I've changed the ocmbat music to non-sw tracks and had fun with it though.

You CAN use your own music, there's a thread that has been around for awhile now:
Guide to Modding the Music in SWG
Hope that helps ya out! I use it and love it.

UltimateJason...
Please don't spread rumors to this poor guy about something you obviously haven't tried. I just set my music up yesterday, about an hour before giving that guy the link and every song in there works perfectly. I even got my Wife to setup some of her music.
And yes, Space works perfectly fine too.

Sir, I HAVE tried. Over and over again. My combat music just doesnt work. I spent quite a few hours making sure everything is named correctly and such.
It didnt work for me.
If it works for you, fine. It doesnt for me though. Please do not assume i did not try.
Thank you.

Then let's see if I can't help ya man...it took me a few tries to get it right. I didn't mean to sound insulting, just didn't want the guy thinking he couldn't do it.
Now...are SOME of the songs working for you? Like the character selection, sunset/sunrise, etc.?
The way I did my combat music, which actually doubles for me into space some of the time (haven't setup the specific space-music yet, seems to pull from the same combat music pool as well as it's own), is I picked three songs. For me, that was Duel of the Fates, Battle of Heroes, and an edited version of Obi-Wan vs Anakin.
You know there are 12 different combat songs you have to rename, right? I consider them three songs with four different names each. Here's how I did it:
Took my Battle of Heroes, copied it four times and gave each copy one of these titles:
mus_combat_a_lp.mp3
mus_player_v_creat_a_lp.mp3
mus_player_v_npc_a_lp.mp3
mus_player_v_player_a_lp.mp3
For Duel of the Fates...
mus_combat_b_lp.mp3
mus_player_v_creat_b_lp.mp3
mus_player_v_npc_b_lp.mp3
mus_player_v_player_b_lp.mp3
For Obi vs Ani...
mus_combat_c_lp.mp3
mus_player_v_creat_c_lp.mp3
mus_player_v_npc_c_lp.mp3
mus_player_v_player_c_lp.mp3
Now, this won't replace all the combat music. It seems like the game pulls from a few other songs elsewhere, but the majority of the time (I'd say 70%) it will play my tunes.
For some reason, Battle of Heroes (the "A" option) plays for me a good amount of the time up in space during a dogfight. I've heard Duel of the Fates, "B", play occasionally. Have not heard option "C" play up there yet.
I hope this helps bro, I know it's made a huge impact on how much I enjoy the game.

I will try them, with the .mp3 endings this time. Though the opening music works without the .mp3 ending...

just thought you might like to know that the "player music" volume control has nothing to do with that. that controls the volume of entertainer music played by other players. get it?.

Would anyone happen to know of a way to turn up the volume level, or is that not possible.
and for me...if I had the .mp3 extentesion, they didn't play. But Ive seen it go either way.

You need to get a sound editing program (I use Nero's Wave Editor), select the clip and then put a "Normalize" filter on it. I keep the level up close to 0db.
You can also raise the entire volume level for the clip, but be careful with this as you can get distortion pretty easily.
