Like in other star wars games, the only way to truly destroy a star destroyer is by taking out its shield generators and then the bridge of the ship.
Is this required to kill it?

Am i the only reb that had the balls to go up to it and say "hi" with my proton torpedos?

No, but I'm willing to bet you're the only one silly enough to ask that question after expecting people to reply to your thread in the wee hours of the morning.
Yes, it is required that you destroy the bridge to destroy a Star Destroyer.

You must first take out both shield generators, then the engines, followed by the reactor, and finally the bridge to destroy the Star Destroyer.
