Over the years of imbalance of this game which profession is pvp/pve wise...this is what i've concluded...
Brawler- Pretty good profession to go up since melee is the strongest type of combat professions. You get intimidate that turns heros to zero and stackers to noobs in just one move.
Marksman- Ranged fighting..not really worth it..unless you don't want to pvp and just get money....but whats the worth of money if you only buy weapons and armor and buffs that can't defeat your opponent?
Bounty Hunter- Lame. Pure and simple. Only two good things about it, is if you want to make money/Hunt jedi (but why do that if the profession is so weak) Pistol skills are very good. LLC is effective against battledroids/super battledroids. (well at least closest).
Commando- Use to be powerful. Commandos can dish out huge damage...if they could hit anything. Rockets are good for hitting turrets of bases or burning flags/lairs. Only good for kiling stationary targets. Flamethrower is very powerful, good for killing monsters of all types. Powerful but only good for making money.
Carbineer- They have defense against intimidate.....they can knock targets down pretty good. And thats about it. They suck. They dolow damge.
Pistoleer- Fast and giving you dodging. An alright ranged profession. Pretty weak though.
Rifleman- The best of the ranged professions. It hits from far ranges, but sucks at close. They can sneak and hit targets without being hit. however this requires lots of mind foods/moun gold. Does good damage but is slow and misses.
Combat Medic- Healing people, healing minds...its alright. But you can disease people. basically during a pvp battle with mutliple people you get to be the hit and run rat. You get your swoop ready throw a mind disease and hop on your bike and run away.
Pikeman- If your lucky you can get a DOT (damage over time) pike. Which do pretty good damage and can dot your enemy. Can knock down enemies and has good defenses. Not bad but resistance to this weapon is strong making your pike weak.
Fencer- Fast and has good dodges. Does good damage with a stun baton. Since it breaks through compo. Well most. Pretty weak, but fast.
Swordsman- Somewhat slow but does powerful damage, and does blast damage which can solo most enemies in the game.
Teras Kasi- Fast, powerful and leathal. They can knock you down, keep you there, do fast and heavy damage. However the kinitec damage is bad against ubse and compo. However you can self buff yourself, and immediatly get up from an incap. You can also heal your wounds with meditate no doc or medic or combat med required..or droid!
Smuggler- Make spices for your self..... buff with that and have a quick match. Good pistol skills, and you can slice into things.....you also get bonuses and stuff with faction recruiters. You can knock people down and feign death to heal and make your enemies go away...pretty tricky.
Jedi/Sith- Most powerful in the game. Takes forever to become. But worth it if your up to it. Not to mention a lot of people try to kill you.

I think you are a little to quick to dismiss some of these. Rifleman, for instance, is very powerful against a lot of enemies. The T21's AP3 does tons of damage in PvE, and they can use a Jawa Ion Rifle in PvP, which is very good. Also, I did not have too much of a problem with accuracy, even at close range. It certainly isn't going to be perfect accuracy- rifles are designed for long range combat, and take extra damage at close range anyway. As far as speed, a rifleman can cap speed with just +7 (or +5 with master marksman, though not worth it) in rifle speed, and at that point, they will deal a ton of damage very rapidly.
Some of the other ranged profs are not great for a lot of stuff, but can be powerful with the right template and equipment.
A cookie-cutter melee will beat a cookie-cutter ranged (with possible exception of rifleman in the right circumstances). Certainly, melee has an advantage in many cases. But they are not *always* better.
Just some things to consider.
