I'm not a crafter and hopefully never will be , but my understanding is that If items have identical serial numbers then they can be used in a factory run using a schematic, otherwise the schem uses with the items are one offs, I think.

Some things require "Identical Components" This means it came from the same "factory run". But everything from the same "factory run" has the same "serial number". So!

A DXR Rifle requires two Idential Geo Cubes. Those two cubes must have the same serial number.

A T-21 requires 10 identical Blaster Power Handlers. Each of those power handlers must have the same serial number. Krayt Tissues go into a Power Handler. So to krayt a T-21 You need 11 tissues - 1 tissues to make a schematic of a power handler, and 10 more to do a (small) factory run of those specific tissue enhanced power handlers. You can then use the 10 identical power handlers from the factory run, to put into your shiny new Krayt T-21.

Additionally - long ago there was a bug/exploit/misrepresentation of the game where things would not have serial numbers, and WS could use ANY Krayt Tissue in a factory run - and did NOT NEED that the specific -set- of krayt tissues for the factory run. So the Devs added serial numbers to prevent that, and put in a rule where if a component didn't have a serial number - it couldn't be crafted with. When they put in this rule - they didn't add serial numbers to everything - so things like the Dead-Eye Serum (alderanian flora) and Berserker Rifle (Stabilizor component) were uncraftable. They recently added serial numbers to the Berserker Stabilizor Component, so it is now craftable again.

serial numbers are assigned to all crafted items and looted components (usually a alphanumeric string like 77je0sLt1). When a schematic calls for a subcomponent or item the serial number is irrelevant if you are just crafting one thing and it doesnt require identical parts. If the crafted item is turned into a draft schematic then the items made from the draft schematic will require the components with the same serial number. For example ifI make a piece of armor in the factory I will need to use exactly the same type of resources (name) and the same serial numbered components. All items made by a factory will have the same serial number for up to 1000 items as this is the crafting schematic limit. So if I run a batch of synthetic cloth and make 1000 of them, all of them will have the same serial number. If the item I want to make takes 4 synth cloth and I want to make it in a factory, then the most I can make is 250. Some regular schematics require identical components as well, like an ubese jacket requires 4 identical ubese segments.

Where this is really important and probably where you hear about it more is with loot. Say I want to make the spec ops pack that requires a heavy leather piece, the schematic is limited use (3) so I want to make a factory schematic for it. I can then make the schematic with one leather, the factory then requires the same serial number leathers to make the product, so if I have 6 more leathers of that serial number i get six packs. This is why one or two looted components alone are not that valuable, but larger sets are (not for all loot mind you). So heavy leather dropsa lot, but 8 or 9 identical leathers are more rare and more valuable. So you might be hunting rancors and deleting all the bile because you dont need it, but notice the serial number and if you get 4 or 5+ they will bevaluable to a doc or cm.
