Last nite I used the necessary loot to make a working datapad. It says I can now use it to read a data disk. Where do I get these data disks?

You forgot "wiring" (not "red wiring", not "blue wiring", just "wiring"). Put all those together in the disk repair kit and you get a "datadisk", put the disk into the datapad and get....something (usually little story notes, although I have a vague hope of ending up with something neat like a loot schematic).
