Ok, I've been reading some of the information in the advanced guides on the SWG home page:

http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/content.jsp?page=Advanced%20Guide%20Armor%20Fundamentals

Specifically, these 2 areas:

"But in the case of the power hammer (fig. 3), the Armor Piercing level is higher than that of the gloves. The power hammer, therefore, does 25% more damage. "

"Vulnerability denotes Damage Types in which the armor offers no protection whatsoever. The bone gloves have quite a few of these: Kinetic, Blast, Stun, Heat, Cold, and Acid. Whenever the armor is hit by one of these Damage Types the damage done by the weapon is neither increased nor decreased. It is as if a weapon with an Armor Piercing value of None is used against a target with an Armor Rating of None. Unarmored Player Characters are considered 'vulnerable' to all damage types. "

So according to my calculations, In certain situations, it is better to not wear armor at all, Also when killing MOBs, you can see similiar results possibly.

Here are3 situations

A) Power Hammer, Medium AP, 500 Max damage, vs. Light Amor, 15% resist to Blast

So AP2 is one step up from AP1 so...

500 + (500 x .25) = 625. Then you have to calculate the 15% resist to blast so 625 - (625 x .15) = 531 damage done

B)Power Hammer, Medium AP, 500 Max damage, vs. Light Armor, Vuln to Blast

according to the notes, it would be like weapon was AP0 so...

500 damage output from weapon = 500 damage done to target.

C)Power Hammer, Medium AP, 500 Max damage, vs. No armor, 15% resist to blast

So no armor, means vulnerable to everything? So...

500 - (500 x .15) = 425 damage done to target?

So according to my calculations, In this situation, it is better to not wear armor. I've seen some wierd stuff in the past with what happens with damage, especially with a T21 that has Heavy Armor Piercing compared to Light armor or mobs with no armor or certain vulnerabilities.

Another example:

A) T21 with 500 max damage, Heavy AP, vs. Composite Armor, Light, 60% resist to energy

Since 2 Levels up off armor...

500 + (500 x .25) = 625

625 + (625 x .25) = 781.25

Armor Resist = 781.25 - (781.25 x .40) =312.5 damage done

B) T21 with 500 max damage, Heavy AP, vs. Player with no armor (or armor that is vuln to energy) and 35% synthsteak

Above says that if you don't have armor rating then you are vulnerable to everything so weapon should now be an AP0 weapon so..

500 = 500 damage on target, then with synthsteak 500 - (500 x .35) = 325 damage

Or an extreme example:

Same T21 from above vs. these 2 types of mobs:

Light Armor, 15% Resist to Energy: 781.25 (from above) x .85 = 664

None Armor, 15% Resist to Energy:500 (ap0 vs ap0) x .85 = 425????

I've been wondering about these calculations for a while but haven't been able to do any extensive testing. Does anyone else have any imput on this? It can really change your way of thinking of what damage types to use on certain targets.

Yes, in some situations armor can be a hindrance due to encumbrance and armor levels. The most obvious example of this is vulnerability to lightsaber damage. Another is stun damage. This is the primary reason why "PvP armor" provides stunresist at the cost of lower base values. I have heard of armor layers that provide a low-levelresist against lightsabers (in the 10% range), and there are also PSG's that provide lightsaber resist, but for the most part, if you're goal is to duel a Jedi (or another PvPer who's weapon you have no resist value for), using armor could hurt you instead of help you. Try and wear BE clothes that provide melee defense and other special protection instead.
