wondering if any one could tell me what the sequence or requirements are to dock in space, I have a mission that needs that action but the imp ship refuses to allow me to dock with it

you need to be close to the ship to dock with it too. within 100m for the fastest dock.

the easiest way to disable a ship to dock it is to take the engines, because the way the targeting system works, if you hit the reactor and your ship is too powerful, you can destroy the ship entirely. but remember, some missions you don't need to disable it if it's a neutral ship.

Sometimes you also need to inspect the cargo of the mission target before docking is allowed.
