Um, maybe its obvious, but how do I run backwards, so that I can see what i'm running from and firing at?

use the down-arrow key.

Press the direction opposite of the way your character is facing. It's not always Down Key.

I think it is, actually. Up-arrow will always go in the direction your character is facing. Down-arrow will therefore go in the opposite direction, i.e., backwards.

Directional arrows are in relation to your camera angle. If you press up your character will turn to face away from the camera and move forward. So down will always move you "backward".

The trick is watching behind you and making sure you don't run into a nest of extremely grumpy mobs or bump into the leg of a rogue falumpaset.
