Welcome to Mos Eisley artisan
Before I begin I will say that Artisan is one of the "harder" occupations to make quick money, however if you want XP and money then the artisan is WELL catered for.
In the beginning there was - a Generic Crafting Tool (furtherknown as GCT)huzaah! although this is no good for making role specific items in later stages of artisan it is ideal for what you need firstly do your droid missions, simple stuff and it gets you acquainted with the profession. Done them? good. Now, head for the Mos Eisley shuttleport (/waypoint 3416 -4657) purchase a return ticket to ANCORHEAD shuttleport, it will cost 220 credits.
Now head just west of the shuttleport to the line of mission terminals, double click on the artisan mission terminal, click on the crafting tab. now you will see a list of missions, choose one that the reward is in the 1000c bracket (normally 1200+) and then find another in the same bracket, head off to the NPC's and collect the items to make your components and then head for the shuttleport again.
Whilst you're waiting for the shuttle, why not create those components, load up your GCT and goto the "Missions" tab, make the parts and go for ancorhead, once you've landed (and provided you've made the parts) go to the pickups of the missions, they are always "blahblah blah (a commoner) and drop them off, there you have an easy 2000 - 2500 credits in the bag, now you can return to mos eisley and do it all over again.
There is also a route to BESTINE available, which pays out only 800-900 credits, you will see these on bestine artisan terminals and ancorhead terminals, however I always go with the Mos Eisley ones
A few final tips -

@from each set of missions you will get 120 points of general crafting XP, so the first boxes of Engineering, Domestic Arts & Business are easy to get
@make a sample macro so once you're bored of running the missions or going to bed you can leave the surveying tree to float up, here is the macro I use
Name the macro "sample"
/sample;
/pause 3;
/sit;
/pause 30;
/stand;
/macro sample

Hi Mate,
Useful Guide and Macro. However, your macro will stop whena pop up appears. You know the ones 'Better quality sample found blah blah'. So in order to combat this and make it a true AFK sample macro - If thats your thing of course - I added one line to it:
/sample;
/pause 3;
/ui action defaultButton;
/sit;
/pause 30;
/stand;
/macro Sample
It is also worth noting to the newer players that aren't used to Macro's that the Pause times can be adjusted to allow yourself to heal fully. ie. mine is set to 35 seconds.
Also when you name the macro be sure to call it 'Sample' with a captail 'S' or the macro will not work. The same goes for any capital letters in the macro itself. Macros are CASE SENSITIVE. Thats generally the biggest mistake people make when starting out with macro's.
Enjoy.

How does it work? The pop ups dont have a timer on them. They sit there till you click them.

The old sample macro that didn't block the windows went like this:
/sample
/pause 300(or roughly till you couldn't sample anymore) ---This is where the old macro got stopped
/sit
/pause 100(or till your action replenished)
/repeat line
In order to allow for afk sampling all you need is the sit, which cancels the current sample session, and the macro works till server logs down or your client crashes(that never happens....)

Yup. Ethier macro does the job. Good for collecting new resources when your sitting in the SP waiting for some action
