Hi all!
Being a non-combat type I'm not really into armor, but I've decided to take some minor combat skills just for the heck of it. So, now I need some armor. But can anyone tell me why someone would take encumbrance sliced armor vs effectiveness sliced armor? I'm not really into PvP, so all I'll probably do is fight some med level creatures.
Thanks in advance.

Well a encombrance slice will take up less of your secondary skills to wear. This keeps those pools higher while wearing the armour.
I think the best bet is for a encomberance sliced helm and everything else effectiveness sliced.
The helm takes a large amount of mind to wear, and when using special attacks you can never have to much mind...

You want effectiveness. Since buffs are so good, encumbrance no longer matters.

Unless you are after higher end content. But yes, on balance, encumberance sliced is better for the low to mid range hunting.

Red and Green are not a problem with DOC buffs.
However, Even if you have max mind and get a good ENT buff you will still want more. Usually what I do is get some brandy and that gives me unlimited red, green, blue for most of the creatures. I use ubese because it is cheeper, lighter, and @ 76% not that much lower on kenetic then comp(which is more expensive much heavier on HAM and only 80-85% for a good suit).
So before you ask what will you need you need to pick out a armor 1st. Then find out what is needed.

Thanks for all the quick answers!
I questioned the use of an encumbrance slice from the beginning, since a good buff does wonders. Since Mind is always a bit on the low side,I think I'm gonna go with the suggestion to get a encumbrance sliced helm, and the rest effectiveness.
Any additional input is of course always welcome!

With an Encumberance slice it take less HAM (Health, Action, Mind) to where, with an effectiveness slice the HAM encumberance is the same but the effectiveness (Resistances) are increases upto 25%+. Either are good, depending on what you do alot. If you like to take your armor on and off alot you'll want Encumberance slice Ubese Armor. If you are hitting some hard core places you'll want High Base resistances Composite that has High Energy and Kinetic Reistances with a good effectivness slice.

In reality, encumbrance slices are pretty much useless with doctor and food buffs. Brandy and one or two hits of ahrisa will make any special spammable with no HAM hit.
That being said, most armorsmiths charge significantly less for encumbrance sliced armor, and for all but the most high-level content I use a suit of 80% kinetic, 70% base encumbrance sliced composite.
Just figure out what you're going to do, and tailor the armor to match.

I personally buy ecumb sliced armor for PVE. and effectiveness for PVP armor. Its always good to have at least 2 sets of armor. Depending on the situation.

I always liked Encumberance slices, but I don't PvP. It's espeically good if you can get that high end Composite on without buffs. Means you aren't defenseless after logging in or if you wanna go do something without getting buffed first.
But once you're buffed I'm not sure it matters as much either way except around the mind score.
Best of luck,
Teev.

Architect comes in first place, so I won't do some random (or a lot of) combat. That means when I go out hunting, I go prepared by getting a buff, some brandy etc. So this makes encumbrance slice sound less advantage to me.

doesnt matter at all for PvE
Usually the best for PvE is 80% kenitic then encumbranced slice.
But for PvP encumbrance slice is usless , you need effect slices ... huge dif between full 75% armor and full 80% armor so the higher the better .... if you can aford it you can buy the best slices of an AS's run ... and get full 90% base resist slices.
The encumbrance in pvp realy doesnt matter one bit ... peopel always have buffs ... and you can drink maldo wine and gain an extra 2300 to will power con and stamina so loosing maybe 300 points from a non encumbrance slice will make no dif ... but you get about 20 or 30 % more resists
