You need to be an Elite profession to equip armor. What kind of armor depends on what profession you are. Weapons will require you to be a certain skill level or have a certain skill box before you can use them. Examining the stats on a weapon will show you the certification. It will have a "Required level:" and a "Required Skill:" or something like that on it.
As for armor, it doesnt show the certification, so I will try and give a decent list, this might not be entirely accurate, as Im recalling from memory here, which is a little spotty sometimes.
Assault Armor (Composite, Bounty Hunter, Chitin) used by Bounty hunter, Commando, and something else, cant remember.
Battle Armor (Padded armor, Bone armor, Ris armor) used by Carbineer, Doctor, Combat medic, Ranger I think, and a few others.
Scout armor (Mabari Armorweave, Ubese, Marauder) used by Pistoleer, Rifleman possibly, and smuggler also I think.
Check on the SWG website homepage, and you should see a link on the menu for "Combat Upgrade" right between the link for the "Forum" and "Manual". This will give much more accurate info.
