Why would anyone even attempt to play this game on dial-up? I get lag sometimes with dsl! I didnt even think this game would work with 56k. crazy.
I was surprised to find out that many games do play fairly well on dial-up. I tried it for a few weeks after a move before my cable was being installed. There are obvious downsides, but to me these are the same things people deal with when they have an outdated computer. A 2-3 year old video card usually can't handle crowded areas in this game. If someone can't upgrade they just deal with that and change their game style accordingly.
But these are probably the top reasons for using dialup
1) can't afford it
2) Can't get anything but dialup(Satellite is even more expensive than cable or dsl, a lot more)

"For your information, you REPUBLICAN @SS WIPE, according to this report (http://ftp.fcc.gov/jointconference/services_study-oct2002.pdf) the coverage rate for broadband OUTSIDE a metropolian areas is 48% within the United States."
Wow, you are a real loser.
First off, I am not republican, so thanks for assuming, but I'll just assume that I have a higher level of education and make more money than you.
Second, EVERYONE can get broadband if they want it, via satalite connection.
One of my homes is located outside the nearest town (population 20,000) by 8 miles, and I can still get satalite or wireless internet there.
Don't through outdated statistics at me, I work in the industy, and have a very good idea what I am talking about.

As several other people have stated in this thread, broadband is not accessable at all to some of us. I live in a rural area in georgia that dosn't have cable TV, muchless internet. And DSL is not even close to being an option. As far as satallite internet, I don't know why anyone would waste that much money on something so terrible. This patch is really going to suck, my dial up is bad by dial up standards, my connection speed on my best days dosn't get higher than 24.0 k/s, 56k + are just made up speeds to me. I backup my SWG folder very frequently because of this reason. I'm probably going to have to take my computer over to a friends house to ever get this patch, I don't think it's possible on my connection.
As far as why anyone would play SWG on dial up, it's acctually not that bad. I'd say 90% of the game is very playable on dial-up. I even PvP on occasion, but never anywhere near any large cities. Those are really the only problems with dial up and this game. Being a TKM/doc I don't really need to bother going into cities that much anyways.
This patch is rediculous though, there should be a cheap option for those of us who are unfortionate enough not to be on high speed internet. And from what I've heard, I don't know if JTL is worth spending the money on, especialy just to avoid a large download.

The majority of lag is due to machine spec, on my friends AMD64/1gb/FX5900 he has nothing like the lag he had on his previous system, me just going from 512 - 1Gb made it bearable in coronet, made all the difference.

Satelite would be good for large downloads but pretty useless for gaming due to the massive ping.

i thought the insults etc were relegated to the galaxy forums, but oh well.
in case you can catch this message through all the other nasty ones, there are programs you can download to "keep alive" your connection, as someone earlier mentioned, it fools your isp into thinking you're still doing stuff at your pc when you're really off watching the SW DVD's. when i was dialup i would do this kind of thing overnight.. after a couple of nights you should be all done (barring any other problems which may arise).
remember, you're never the only one having whatever problem, and if you look, you'll find others having exactly the same problem.(computer, game, etc.)on the web, there is usually a solution, too. finding it is the tricky part
the forums here can actually be pretty good, because the bigger the problem, the more people are talking about it and the more likely you'll see it on the first couple of pages listed.

FLUCKA! you put it best, i mean i know nothing aboutmy internetother than what the people that installed it told me. and for all you that wonder why people play with crappy connections, its because this is the kind of game that no matter how bad the lag and downloading gets, you keep going cause you enjoy the game.

56k'er here too, waiting on a 12 hour download and would like to clear up some points raised in this thread.
Standard DSL - Yes, I'm looking to get it as I now have someone to share the cost with (at £25 per month, it's a large chunk out of the pay packet of a minimum wage worker)
Satellite DSL - £80 per month. Need I say more about the cost being prohibitive?
56k Performance - Ping ranges from 300-1500. (DSL ping = 200) High ping = restart connection. I do not get lag from being on 56k sinceI upped myself to 1Gb RAM from 512Mb. However, when flying into a starport pc's and npc's 'spawn' in at a slower rate. I also find slower load times at starports, but not by much.
Bandwidth - If you press ctrl+shift+g you get the network status window which tells you the up/down stream rates from swg. I challenge any of you to get it over 5k in total. Why? 'Cos it's capped at 5k (the approx. max speed you get on a 56k connection)
***As I started writing, I had a wait of 12 hours predicted. Halfway thru, the game starts. I was going to moan about BITS as I have had it on and been online daily since release of BITS, being careful to include at least 1 hour of 'idle' time to allow for the download. Methinks the Time Remaining... calculation does not take into account what's already been received, and treats it as 'still to obtain'

I think adding a simple "resume download" feature would take care of a lot of the problems of lost connections during the download so people dont have to start everytime from scratch.
