Thread: DEFENSE STACKING...HELP!

ok ok i'm getting a bit confused now. I was grinding this template:
Master Swordsman / Master Brawler / Teras Kasi 4/3/0/4 / Fencer 4/0/4/0 / Medic 0/0/4/0
because i thought all these defences would stack up and make me uberly in PVP. Now a friend has told me that defense stacking no longer works and so i was wondering why so many people go for these templates getting only the defences from some proffesions and also i need to know whether this template will be good in PVP and what kind of defences i will have, the scythe being my main weapon and i thought fencer and TKA for my defences...
Please help!

great site, you can build your template on there and you can get a read out of all your skills.
defense skills cap at +125.

thanks m8 - great help but can someone please enlighten me on the whole defense stacking and uber PVP templates thing etc. i mean if i have a scythe equiped will my tka and fencer defences still....happen...?? and stuff please help

The generic defenses that exist across ALL profession will stack up to their cap of 125, these are things such as melee and ranged defense and all the Defense Vs mods (Blind, KD, dizzy etc), this is because every prof has access to them.
The time you won't get things to stack is when you look at defensive mods that only work with certain profs, these would be things like dodge (fencer and pistol) block and counterattack - these will only work if you have a weapon that is relevant to that prof equipped.
So for example, if you're a fencer / rifleman, while you have agaffi equipped your dodge skill will apply, but when you switch to a rifle the dodge mod no longer applies and instead its block that comes into effect.
Bottom line is, if the mod exists on more than one prof, it'll work if you have a weapon from one of those profs equipped (it's one of the reasons the pistoleer / fencer template is so popular : dodge exists for both of these professions, so if you have a pistol or fencer weapon equipped it makes no difference, the dodge mod still sticks)

Go MBrawler/MSword/Fencer2040/Medic2040/TK4304. 249SP usage. When Melee Speed rolls around in the next FS Phase 2, decide if you can go without bleed heal since you were prepared to do so before, and drop FA2 (and FA1, since without FA2 it's useless). That frees up enough to get melee speed.
Ideally, your best template would be:
MBrawler/MSword/Fencer2040/Medic0040/TK4304/EnhRef2000/ComProw0004
You'll be capped on melee def, and a Lightweight pack plus one Aakuan ring would round out your Ranged Def. The template is also a perfect 250SP expenditure.
EDIT: If you didn't mind SEA hunting/ring buying, you could go:
MBrawler/MSword/TK4304/Fencer0040/Medic0040/EnhRef4400/ComProw0034
Melee Defense +122 (+125 with a pack)
Ranged Defense +100 (+113 with two AA rings and a pack)
Mind you, it's not SIMPLE unlocking these steps.

Okay, so if I went Master Fencer / TKM / Master Brawler I would have Melee Mitigation 3 twice over, 105 Dodge, 141 Melee Defense, 119 Ranged Defense, 96 Defensive Acuity and 85 Combat Equilibrium.
For those of you who know PvP, can you break this down for me in the absolute simplest terms possible?
I hope one of the Test Center servers is still up with a Frog so I can take a look at a few things, but I'm very, very curious about this now.

No problems with your template but saying "Melee Mitigation 3 twice over" means you don't know that mitigations don't stack.
You also won't have an AP2 weapon to gain a 25% damage bonus against armored opponents. This is why I'm a Swordsman with elements of Fencer and TK in my template. The only real downside to it is you HAVE to cap Swordsman, which with Master Brawler still requires +95 speed for a 5.9 PH (which means the cheapest way to accomplish this would be with FS Melee Speed plus a +3 2h Speed SEA). +95 covers you up to a 6.2 speed hammer, +96 all the way up to a 7.7...which is also moot considering the highest hammers go is 5.9 (that I've seen).
(The speed deficiency is a bad thing either way: You need +89 to cap with a 3.6 PH, +9 more than you'd get with Master Brawler + Master Swordsman. THAT will not be an easy (or cheap) find. +93 will cover you for all specials except Hit3 with a 5.9, HeadHit3 will still be swinging at 1.0.)
Sure, you'll have stun damage, but even that's not a sure-kill anymore, especially as stun layers get better, and batons are AP0. Give me a kickass capped damage-sliced Acklay PH anyday, and a scythe with 200-350 damage coupled with AP2? Mmmm.
Of course, most people wouldn't consider this, but you can mod a Vibroblade exactly as you would a VK (the Vibro Unit can be modified just like anything else), and the VB is the only AP1 Fencer weapon. So in essence, Fencers have a VK, they just never use it since the baton seems to be their de facto weapon.

The biggest problem with that template is the lack of any ranged mitigation. If you don't have 90% armor with 40% stun and a crapload of looted DOT weapons, Riflemen and BHs (who have more than enough accuracy to hit you with every single shot) are going to rip you pieces.
