I'm tired of my wookiee, I want to go human. I want to keep my name though.
ANyone know any tricks to do this?
I'd like to at least the cold hard facts such as how long after deleting a charaqcter can you create a new one on that same server, and how long until the name is available after the orignal character has been deleted?

I would bet it would be after the server restarts, but its only a guess

Well, a few months agoI deleted a character then remade it with the same name on the same server shortly after I deleted it. So I'd say about a minute or two. But test it out by creating a character on one server, delete it then try to create another with the same name on the same server.

I've always heard/read that it takes about 24 hours before the name to be available again. Perhaps this is just a "best guess" to give them time to change things around?

There's no set amount of time for a character name to be cleared out of the database. Could take 1 minute, could take 1 month. And it has nothing to do with server restarts.
Not exactly what you want to hear, I know, but that's pretty much the long and short of it.

I actually ticketed this quite some while ago.
I cann't remember the exact wording but the responce basically said something along the lines of, 'the name database is refreshed once every 2-3 hours'.
So yes it could happen almost imediatly if you are lucky but it shouldn't take longer than 3 hours.

I've personally had several occassions where it's taken more than 3 hours to free up a name for reuse... a lot more

Ok, I may be risking flames here, but tough.
In EQII the name filter is automatically refreshed as soon as you delete your character (No 2 characters are allowed on the same server with the same name). In fact, you see a nice little message telling you just that, something like "refreshing character list."
I have not tested if SOE has added this feature to SWG, but the last time I deleted a character here and tried to use the same name, it didn't come up as available that day, or the next. I was able to finally get the name again. Other times, before that, I could use the name instantly. No rhyme or reason it seems.
