That's interesting...
All that to remove ALT as a default keymapping?
I'm curious though, I have my Toggle Mouse Mode set to my middle mouse button but can still use ALT combos to fire macros (ALT+A for example). Not noticed if it changes the mouse mode myself though.
Is that the reason you changed it? To stop ALT changing mouse mode when playing macros?
Wasn't all that claer from your post, that or it's too early for me to read well.

That does seem like alot of work. I have only used the Alt key 1 time in almost 2 years ingame. That was whenI created my character, before leaving for planet the mouse look got rebinded to the mousewheel button (button 3) like the other person mentioned. I've never used alt for anything ingame and dont really understand how it would effect calling your macros with the UI change. The alt key is would still be recognized as the alt key wouldnt it?

The ALT key still works to call macros when it's bound to Toggle Mouse Mode. I use it for different macros to stand, sit, burst run, heal, etc.
For a while I got used to double tapping ALT (that is, Alt-H to heal and then hit ALT again) to keep it from changing mouse modes, but then another change was made. Now if you hold down ALT too long it doesn't change the mouse mode at all. That combined with client lag made it intermittent for me. So at this point it would sometimes change mouse modes, and sometimes not.
When I'm in combat I use a combination of mouse clicks and macros, and having it seemingly randomly change mouse modes on me was hurting my gameplay.
I tried to do a search to find a way to fix it, but all I could find was other people complaining about it and asking how to unbind it.
If I can help one person my time is not wasted.
EDIT: guantan: These latest ui changes didn't change ALT's functionality, all they did was give me a loophole that allowed me to unbind ALT. The inability to unbind ALT change happened a long time ago.

It's funny you mention this because one of my biggest annoyances is that you can no longer remap the ALT key. That safeguard wasn't in place way back when. I actually have an .INP file that I saved from when it could still be remapped and I always just copy it to new characters since I like using ALT key combinations for shortcuts.
If anyone wants me to email a copy of the .INP file that has all the regular key mappings except for the ALT key replaced by the Windows Key (next to the ALT on most keyboards) just send me a PM and I'll email the file to you. You just need to place it in your character's folder in your profiles and rename it to the number that is on all your other character's files

I loved the standard SWG keymap up until the day they removed the ability to unbind the ALT key. I use the ALT key for a lot of macros and having it change mouse modes on me was cumbersome to say the least. I dislike the new interface mode, but with its introduction my one gripe with the standard SWG keymap has been fixed.
There may be much easier ways to do this but this worked for me and so I present it to you. This involves some file copying and renaming. Any custom keymaps you have will be reset.
Log into the game and go into your keymap settings. Choose the new "Star Wars Galaxies Modeless" option. Now click on the "ui" tab and scroll down to "Toggle Mouse Mode". This will be blank. Bind it to whatever you'd like. Remember to click Apply or OK.
Quit the game.
Navigate to your StarWarsGalaxies\profiles\accountname\servername folder.
Make a copy of your .inp file.
Log back into the game.
Go back into the keymap options and choose the "Star Wars Galaxies" keymap. Remember to click Apply or OK.
Quit the game.
Navigate to your StarWarsGalaxies\profiles\accountname\servername folder.
Delete the .inp file and replace it with the .inp you saved earlier.
You're done. When I did this for some reason right click no longer made me run. Just go into your keymap settings and set it to "Walk Toward Cursor" rather than "Walk Forward" to retain its original functionality.
Now this may present you with a problem. By getting around SOE's safeguards you may accidentally unbind ALT without binding it to something else. This is a grave problem. When you see the steps you have to go through to fix it, you'll realize why SOE, in all of its infinite wisdom, prevented you from unbinding ALT in the first place. If you have accidentally left yourself without a "Toggle Mouse Mode" button and find yourself stuck in mouse look mode, follow these steps:
1. Press Ctrl-O.
2. Bind "Toggle Mouse Mode" to something.
But hey, that's what you get for circumventing their safeguards.
Hope this helps. It's made my play experience infinitely smoother.

Umm..
You can still remap it, it's just a bit awkward (I just did it about 5 minutes ago to test it.)
Here's exactly what I did:
Keys: ALT, ALT
I said remap to Numpad zero:
Keys: ALT, NumPad0
I said remap to Insert:
Keys: Insert, ALT
I said remap to Numpad Zero:
Keys: Insert, NumPad0
et voila!
You may not have to do it exactly like that (and I dare say you don't have to have those keys) but this is just what I did, and it worked fine

Hmm I could never get it to work that way. It always replaced the one on the right, keeping ALT as the one on the left. Oh well.

That's always been my experience as well. I'll give it a try though. That would make things a bit easier.
