I'm not impressed. IMHO they've butchered what was once a pop culture phenom.

LIMBOK,

It always surprises me when I hear people say bad things about the "special edition" Star Wars trilogy. Lucas has said over and over in uncountable interviews that if he had the technology in the 70's and 80's to do what he did in the special editions, he would have done the movies that way the first time. The Special editions are what the creator of star wars really wanted the movies to be, but couldn't do it because of budget and technology concerns. To say that the special editions are somehow heretical bastardizations is actually a contradictionof the concept of the whole existence of star wars.... Besides, it's not like the story changed or the characters are different in the special editions. the only differences is additional content, most of which was actually on the original shooting script/design documents before the movis were shot but had to be cut because of the aforementioned technicalities. The special editions have only added to the originals, and enhanced them with better sound and video quality. Unlike movies like Lord of the Rings where entire passages of a story were omitted or utterly changed (elves at Helms deep is like a black cancer of death eating away at my soul) the special editions only add to the movies. So why you be hatin' bro? heh

I have no dount that this will be the biggest DVD seller of the year. Maybe of the decade.

yeah, i'm looking forward to tuesday. i didn't have any problem with the special edition except for the stupid missed shot change, and the fact that the ewoks weren't digitally enlarged to make them wookies

And what would you call it now?

Other than, say, the (about to be) highest selling DvD series to date?

It's funny when people like you try to get all up in a fuss because you think you are sooo "old school" and will only let yourself be entertained by the original. Forget the facts that the above poster mentioned about how George Lucas intended the films to be this way. You are much too l337 and old skewl to actually like the new videos.

You will, however, allow yourself to play a game endorsed by Lucas, post on his board over a thousand times about his game, and have managed to score the rank of Colonel. You do, however, realize that this game is nothing like the movies, right? Let alone accurate?

I find it even funnier when someone simply makes a statement, and another has to label it as something more than it is/was. And I agree with him, Lucas can say what he wishes, I'm certain the directors of other classic films also had slightly altered visions in mind, or better still, in color (Ted Turner anyone?).....Anyhow, it's still SW, I'm not personally thrilled by the fact I can't have the basically unaltered memories of the film I saw as a kid by watching it on my widescreen here (aka an "original version" release of the dvd), but at least I don't have to watch my pixelated Laserdisk transfer to dvd anymore. I know plenty that love the new version (although, most of them never saw the originals, granted, at least until after the new ones), more power to 'em, and if it gets them interested, great, butpersonally I'mgoing tobuy 'em with a grimace, simply because I can't have a cleaned up version of the ones I remember (added footage, great, altered footage, blah).

99.9% of ANY fan is still going to buy it, as a cookie without the chocalate chips is still a cookie.

Im definitely gonna buy this box tomorrow Im not bothered by the changes, its Lucas right to release them in the shape he wants it.. they could've offered both the new and old versions though, for the diehard fans.. but wouldnt surprise me if that will happen later. They need a new box to release when blueray arrives afterall
