No, I don't mean being able to takesomething with your webcam post it somewhere in the game.. censorship people would have a field day with the can of worms that would open up from that. But imagine this..
An in-game camera item that allowed us to take a screenshot, but instead of it getting saved to the harddrive, it gets uploaded to the game server and becomes a painting item that we could place in a structure?
So a disgusting amount of diskspace doesn't get used up overnight, players would have something like lots limiting the number of photos that could be taken (higher rez or bigger paintings would use more lots). If you want a new pic, you'd have to drop one of your old ones.
This way you could have a group picture of their guild, or a 'vacation' pic of yourself standing at the crater rim of the volcano on Lok, or if you're just not happy with the selection of paintings available in the game, go into space and grab a shot of that really cool nebula with the Endor moon behind it.

Great idea, but I wouldn't hold my breath on seeing it implemented anytime in the next year.

If it makes any sense what-so-ever forget about it, the devs won't put it in.

I'd like some kind of "Artist" profession, that could do stuff like this. Naturally, to counterbalance the bandwith of having people uploading their custom paintings/photos to the server, and having them become in-game objects would be quite high[perhaps you have to talk to an art dealer to get them made?]...
Love this idea. Would love to see it. Get a nice painting of a Jedi, or an A-wing, to hang up in my house[or my nova courier!]

And I'm sure they appreciate your very constructive criticism.

Serverload and bandwidth will probably be what they cite.
The paintings already in-game are VERY low quality jpg but they look ok as long as you're not zoomed all the way in on them. And there's a pretty big spike in data transfer everytime someone enters a house anyway, do you think it'd cripple the servers that much?

I love this idea. In fact, i have been crusading for it since the original beta of SWG. So i support anyones attempt to push this sort of addition to the game! 8)
My original concept was as follows...
Architects could make 3 size picture frames (S,M,L), and these could be made vertical or horizontal and would have a few color options perhaps. A player would activate the frame from their inventory using radial and the next screenshot the took sent a low-res version to the frame instead. [This way players couldnt use jpegs and such from their harddrive that they tricked the game into thinking was a screenshot because the frame intercepts the screenshot before its saved in your SWG program folder.]
- It could be interesting if only architects could use the frames as it would make a cool artist comunity with photographers for hire. =)

I like your idea for making the frame item double as image capture device. That'd give an extra edge to crafters especially if a frame could only capture an image once. If you wanted a new pic, you'd have to buy a new blank frame.
I think you're forgetting though that we'd need to limit how many pics each player can have to keep the servers from getting terribly overloaded with this. If you had 'photographers' capturing images and then selling them, we'd need a near infinite amount of disk space for the server to contain it all.

Or they could start a "contest" where players can send in screenshots and the winners become a painting ingame.

Heh, that'd be pretty cool too. Actually come to think of it, I think it deserves it's own thread. This is a really good idea and could apply to a lot more than just pictures.
EDIT -a new design contest thread is located here..
