Hey,
I was like "whoa, what the check?". Well my problem was, I was always playing with Shadows on, and was suffering from low fps. Well, I deleted the bike in my toolbar, and bang, I got around 5 fps more...what the chek?!

Very strange? Bet it was just a coincidence. Don't see how it would do that, but this is the wonderfull world of SOE, so I guess anything is possible

Shadows have a big impact on other games aswell. Remember when I had aso so comp playing Madden a few yrs ago, laggy as hell but with shadows off it ran smooth as an androids butt.

Guys, and take thsi from me, ive been on Dialup, broad. Low ram, and now high ram. The best and singlly easiest thing to boost your game performance, is RAM, i want from 256, to 51, saw mrginaly improvement, then jumped from 512 to 1gig and BAM. My FPS never drop below 15, i never see lag anymore in the upload or download rates(where i was getting massive amounts on dialup and with low ram). Ive experimented to make sure its the ram, and i can honestly say single handedly, get your self mroe ram. WHen i go back to dialup( i upgraded both puters i play on, home and school) and now have th higher ram, that puters perfrmance impoved dramatically as well. MORE RAM, MORE RAM, MORE RAM, cant stress that enough.

RAM is definately the way to go. I recently upgraded from 512 to 1 gig..... makes a big difference.

I'm sitting on a 34Mbit line (yes, thirty four), got a ATI Radeon X800 Pro and AMD XP2800+ CPU and 1 GB with RAM
SWG is allways lagging, tried it with shadows and without.
Sometimes it drops down to 1fps in areas with large amount of people (Mos Eisley and Coronet starport on Farstar..... ugh)
I think that if you disable chat-bubbles then you get through areas like that on maybe just 5-6 fps, but still.
Much of this might be attributed to the loading of all the players. Each player got individual body characteristics (face, height, species etc) and the clothes, weapons, animations, colors and so on.
And no; i'm not running kazaa, bittorrent or anything else in the background, even disable Norton Antivirus when i play.
I think the problem is the graphics engine itself. It's designed to be "Industrial" (robust), by that i mean that it need to support a lot of dynamic content, additions, modifications etc. but not nesseceraly give the best visual look like for example the "Source" engine (*drool*) that Half-Life 2 uses.
The engine code would probably make John Carmac shriek in terror of how poorly written it is.
A good guide of what we should set the the graphical options to is welcomed, and i don't mean a recite of the helptext, but a good laymans explanation to for example what "Vsync" really is and what it does for the game in regards to fps and visual performance.
I'm not just talking about Vsync, but ALL the options (the launchpad options as well). Maybe SOE even could create an Auto-detect feature to set the settings for "Best Performance" or "Best Visual Experience".

The whole FPS issues people have is really a mystery to me. I never had those problems even on my old system, never fell below 10 fps even in heavy areas. On my new system I never drop below 25fps even in severe areas. and most of the time it is pegged at 30 fps. I have all the graphic settings at a medium lvl with some maxed, shadows on, and all "eye candy" boxes enabled.
Sys specs on new system is:
P4 3.2E 800mhz fsb, 1mb cache, HT
Asus P4800 Mobo
1 Gig dual channel DDR 3200 ram
Radeon 9800 pro 128mb
WD 74 gig 10,000 rpm Raptor HD
500 watt antec true power PS.
Cable internet
It really is a mystery because I see people posting that have even faster systems but getting really poor framerate. The only thing I can think of is they have some setting either in game or in the out of gamevid cards settings not set optimally.
One thing I have noticed is most people posting with graphical issues are usually running Nvidia type cards. I see very few people posting with issues that are running ATI. Coincidence?
