Thread: Forum request, game guide copy protection???
basicly i have stumbled across a game guide I wrote on this fourm that has been published on a known SWG resorce website, swgcenter.com
i was looking on google to see if any other info has been published from say SOE or other players about bugs with the Y-8 mining ship, i had previously writen a game guide based around the bugs and how the ship should work. the guide in question Y-8 mining guide (working around the known bugs) was taken from this forum and publish on swgcenter.com without my knolage or permission. i fell a little cheated because of this, to be honist i would have no problem with it IF they asked and gave me propper credit for this guide but as you can tell nothing was done, no permission was given and thus i am a truly unhappy nuna.
i would like to know if there can be a way to protect material on the game guide forum so as this may not happen again or happen to other players who are publishing help on this forum.
first off you can do what i did, Note at the foot of all my posts a small disclamer about my posts. hopefully this can help if you just tap in a line with a short disclamer followed by "©200x" (thats ascii code 0169 hold alt tap it in the numpad.)it should ward off guide thifes who may want to publish your guide and pass it off as thier own.
SWGcenter.com pay around $50.00 for a game guide to thier members and if your not the member who posted it you may of been subject to copyright theft, so keep on guard.

Obviously never had an original thought put down on paper ever now have you. Having YOUR work stolen and somebody else taking credit for it is not something most people would enjoy.

Who does it harm exactly? When he wrote the guide he was essentially giving it to everyone in a very helpful manner. Why he should then bleat when someone puts the guide to very good use.. in my opinion..is beyond me.
- Fansites that quote an article or patch message from an SOE site (such as Harpy's Head Tavern or other game site associated with Station.com) are requested to limit the quote to a paragraph or less and provide a link back to The Station or associated game site for the full article or message, rather than reproducing on the Fansite the entire patch message or article. Permission to link from the fansite to Station.com or the associated game site is granted in such circumstances.
And also anything you upload becomes the property of SOE:
By submitting (e.g., uploading or transmitting) Content to an SOE Communication Feature, you automatically grant SOE the royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, and fully sublicensable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display such Content (in whole or part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed. In addition, you warrant that any and all so-called "moral rights" in the Content have been waived.

While posting it on that site is not harmful it is essentially ethically wrong for someone to do so without the author's permission.
Think of it as putting words in someone else's mouth. If his name was on the guide people might assume that he supports and uses that website. It doesn't seem like a big deal but in other cases it could be harmful to the author.
It's not like you're writing a dissertation, but nevertheless common courtesy would be to refer to the address / site the information was taken from.
I always do this - because many times I don't even know if it is true or correct what is written here. References can be BAD as well ![]()
and it dose feel like some one stole credet even though the whole gudie was word for word and even quoted my Forum name. But thats not the point i would of liked some one to ask first, and also the fact swgcenter has a paid content disclamer (ie once its on the website it becomes thier property) just makes me all the more angry.
Also, SOE should have a vested intrest in shutting the pay-sites down, or getting a piece... Afterall, Its LA and SOE Intellectual propert that these sites are making money off of.
